A What Car Thread.......

I won't be joining the show and shine brigade anytime soon ;)

A car is to be driven, not looked at and polished to death :t-up:

Langy, I suppose I bought mine because of heritage*. I've been a Lotus fan since I was 11 years old and saw the first 7.

I think the Caterham and Westfield are very different beasts. The Caterham's tend to have factory everything whilst the Westfield's have whatever people decide to put in them. The factory seem to follow the customers with engine options. Also the Caterham is a complete kit (assuming they send it all) whereas the Westfield kit seems to be the main parts and you have to source everything else yourself. The Caterham kit has the loom and brake/fuel pipes fitted, the Westfield doesn't.

So, to sum up. The Caterham is for the chaps who want a standard car with a bit of tweeking and the Westfield is for those that are prepared to do it their way.

Best value for money is the Westie, no doubts in my mind. And I'm not just saying that because of where I am.

* I bought mine in 1992 when it was 3 years old. I was working 100 hours a week in those days so just needed one I could drive and not spend too much time tinkering.

Might I remind you that, as a WSCC Member, you are under a statutory obligation to get everyone in here excited about spending your money, start a small row about what's best, take all this information on board, and then either do the exact opposite thing (such as buying a London taxi) or do absolutely nothing, but only revealing your decision when someone asks after several days of silence or when the thread drops to at least Page 4.

Hey, I don't make the rules, I just enforce 'em. :d

a total change of direction but cool

various nobles starting from 22k - although I think they may be a tad troublesome

or you can buy a nice westfield or caterham which is lets face it the best option if you wanna go have fun on a track and not get to many expensive bills

Right I've been on a here for a good while now, have met a few of you and would take on board any advice given by the majority of people here, so here goes....

I parted company with my Quantum Xtreme yesterday and am ready to start looking for something to replace it. The Xtreme had a pinto and 140bhp, it was more than adequate and I thoroughly enjoyed every second I was driving it.

So what do I want from the replacement 'toy' car.....

  • Something that makes my grin like a kid when i jump in it
  • Something i can tinker about with
  • Must be able to fit in a single garage with a bit of space for other toys (bikes etc)
  • Something I can take on a track without any issues (noise, reliability, no mahosive running costs)
  • Proven track record in what it does (i know this is subject to build etc....)
  • Roofless of roofed.... highly dependant on what it is...
  • Something that willfully wastes petrol :d
  • Something that is built, don't mind upgrading things myself
  • Something I'd fit in, (skinny and 6 ft +)

Things I've considered over the last couple of months are:

  • Ultima GTR - tad on the expensive side, may have noise issues, not much space left in the garage
  • GD Lola T70 - similar issues as the GTR, and only one for sale !
  • Westy of some description - more of a track version than carpeted and creature comforts,
  • Carterham - to keep the heritage thing going........ :p R300 ish
  • Porsche boxster / 911 (or whatever number designation they are)
  • TVR T350 - look nice
  • Atom - far too exposed, not for me

So it's over for to the collective for comments, advice, any previous experiencing in owning any of the above, general banter, etc, etc.....

Oh and budget...... not quite enough to buy an Ultima GTR at the lower end of the market :(

I did a trackday at Bedford a couple of months ago and one of these was there, tail sliding around, superb, definitely one for my garage if I had loads-a-money.

found it - pretty awsome car

smaller than a ultima (less claustrophobic due to central driving position) you can get two m8s in with you - quicker than most of them too - good for pulling ladies
