M444TTB
I may be going to look at an SEiGHT at the weekend. It's quite a long round trip and the car will use every single last penny of my budget (and some frankly) even to go in at the low ball price ive discussed with the seller so buying badly and it having a meltdown will really ruin my summer! Do you kind people have any good advice for buying and running SEiGHT's? Specifics to look for, questions to ask etc. The car I may go to see apparently has c200bhp from a modified 3.5L carb engine so I'm guessing it should be pretty swift on track despite being heavy in Westfield terms. Are there any specific pitfalls, weight aside, for SEiGHTs in track? I have in my head oil surge, although this car has a baffled sump. An alternative car, which I was planning to see until the above presented itself, is a very nice specced 2001 SEiW with a 1600 Ferriday CVH. It's only down the road and on for £8k, which I'd hope to knock the trader down on. It's on eBay (no sign on PH!) if anyone is interested. Bit of a different proposition entirely but I wonder if it may not bankrupt me!
Captain Colonial
Mmmmm...Ferriday....! Sorry, just had a semi moment there. Carry on...
M444TTB
They seem ver reputable! I'd post a link to the car but I can't work out how via my phone! It has RAC roll bar, aero screen, fire extinguisher, battery kill switch, tonneau cover(s), etc. if it had a Zetec and not a CVH I probably wouldn't have a thread here asking about SEiGHT's. Teenage fantasy car or otherwise!
Dommo
Stupid iPhones. CVH effort: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/IMMACULATE-LOW-MILEAGE-WESTFIELD-SE-like-Lotus-7-Caterham-Seven-Robin-Hood-/260973514716?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item3cc33bcfdc
Captain Colonial
CVHs may not be popular but they are no slouches if set up well, and a Ferriday-tuned unit will be excellent and well worth a drive IMHO. Put it this way, if it was yours and you decided to swap engines, I'd politely rip your hand off. Personal choice only, mind. Bu worth a test drive! Hammy
I did hanker for a Seight for a while and personally fuel consumption would worry me, esp for a tuned one, so I'd prefer a fuel injected one. I could be wrong here but someone may gave better knowledge
Captain Colonial
Just seen the ad, lovely car, and I'm betting those HP figures are a tad conservative. I personally would go and look hard with cash in hand compared to draining every penny on a V8, but again all IMHO.
M444TTB
I suppose fuel consumption is a genuine worry with the RV8. It would be worse than my BMW (miles faster though!). A significant engine problem is also going to be very costly vs a CVH, where I'd imagine a worst case would be dropping a Zetec in for £2k or so (I did see that thread!). Didn't mean to turn this into a 'should I buy X or Y?' thread! Nor talk myself into a CVH thread! Doh
Captain Colonial
It's not all about the engine...that one has an excellent spec and looks well sorted. Ignoring that, and supposing the CVH isn't there for a moment, a sensible course when buying is to set an extra 20% cash aside in reserve in case something goes wrong. Nothing worse than having a beautiful four wheel toy that you can only look at and not enjoy because there's nothing in the pot to pay for repairs. May never happen, but if it did, how would you feel?
Marcus Barlow - Show and Events Co-ordinator
I logged the fuel consuption on my SEiGHT last year on a 1200 mile Scotland road trip, my 3.9 V8 carb returned average 26.5 mpg on standard unleaded with passenger. adamnreeves
This could be a long list. Is this purely for track use, some track some road, more track, more road.... If it is purely track use then don't buy an SEiGHT. Can you send the link now? I am happy to take a call from you if you want the low down. M444TTB
Marcusb - That's not bad I guess! The whole objective for buying a Westfield to use for track days and other fun (vs blowing it on my current track day BMW 328) was to have something of some worth in 2 years time. The BMW would have swallowed £6k and been worth £3k more than now (and still slow!). So I suppose the SEiGHT presents a far bigger chance for ruining the plan. Great if it's worth what I paid in 2 years time. Not so much if I've had to spent 50% of that on it.
Cleggy the Spyder Man
that does look a very nice car - the only down side is that there have been some very nice zetecs and VX engine cars that have sold for similar monies does look very tempting though if it is in as good a nick as the advert suggest? Track, fun road driving and the odd bit of pointless crushing of the countryside really. The wife will just love aero screens for that...! What did you want a link to? The SEiGHT? Just re-read your post and can see I was confused
