blot Posted December 30, 2001 Posted December 30, 2001 Has anyone been to Elvington? Have had my Westie for three weeks now and haven't even had to put petrol in due to work/weather etc. Bookatrack have a day on 12th Jan and am tempted but I've only done trackdays before so I'm curious as to what to expect apart from huge run off areas. (hooray! Are the driving techniques any different to track? I've done Croft, Donnington and Oulton in an Evo so expect to be somewhat tentative as I have not even begun to try the car out yet. Advice welcome, any one else going? Quote
Mark Stanton Posted December 30, 2001 Posted December 30, 2001 If you're still getting used to the Westfield, then go for it better to find the limits at Elvington than the A4675874645. Enjoy Quote
blot Posted December 31, 2001 Author Posted December 31, 2001 Tell me about it, last time I was on that road the traffic was dreadfull, had to take the B54767727733332666 and cut across Wobbly Edge toward Knarksout Quote
Steve Kirk Posted December 31, 2001 Posted December 31, 2001 Dear blot elvington is the usual ww2 RAF air base, never been to a track day but have driven around a couple of times marshalling at tarmac rally events .basically decent tarmac for the most .the main runway was resurfaced recently for a world speed attempt and is in good nick.and if all else fails and it rains there is a good aircraft museum on site. have a good day! steve Quote
juansolo Posted December 31, 2001 Posted December 31, 2001 Elvington is the gooning capitol of the universe. With absolutely tonnes of runoff there cannot be a better place to play with a new/unfamiliar car. See you there. Quote
blot Posted January 1, 2002 Author Posted January 1, 2002 juansolo Sounds good fun, what are you driving? Quote
juansolo Posted January 1, 2002 Posted January 1, 2002 Unfortunately the PPE is in several bits at the moment and is unlikely to be back together by then. So I'll be there in my Citroen Xantia oil burner in ride blagging/cone setting up mode. If you are early enough you may even catch the barge doing one or two laps which can be quite amusing. Pop over and say hi Quote
blot Posted January 2, 2002 Author Posted January 2, 2002 juansolo Sure will, I'll be with my missus, no snow, ice, fog, rain, hail ,sleet or blinding sunshine please. Oh and around 25C with a light breeze would be nice. Ps, do you get your tyres thru bookatrack or a local supplier, £150 sounds very tempting for tyres to abuse on trackdays. Quote
juansolo Posted January 2, 2002 Posted January 2, 2002 Because of the very open nature of the airfield I suspect it will be cold probably very. Wrap up warm. I shall be looking all Russian in my new woolley hat no doubt. As for tyres; I've always got mine via Jonny. He can get Yokohama's at very good prices and occasionally does very good deals on ACB10 part worns. Beware though there is no fitting included for Yoko's or part worns. Some tyre fitting places can be a bit funny about fitting other peoples tyres and part worns. I've found Just Tyres in Wakfield are ok with this and charge about £5 a wheel for fitting and balancing. --Disclaimer-- I am in no way affiliated with BookaTrack (dispite the stickers on my car). I am just a very satisfied customer and Jonny has been very good to me in the past so I don't mind giving him a bit of free advertising space on the car. Quote
juansolo Posted January 13, 2002 Posted January 13, 2002 Blot, There are a fair few piccies of your car in my Gallery on the BaT site if your interested. If you want the high-res, low compression versions of them (1280x960 - around 200k each) BaTMail me with your e-mail address and I'll post them on. Hope you enjoyed it, Juan. Quote
blot Posted January 13, 2002 Author Posted January 13, 2002 Solo, Love the glare pic, really pleased you got some pics as my wife didn't find the zoom button on our camera unfortunately, cheers mate. Now I have some idea of the car, will happily offer some passenger laps next time if your motor ain't running. I have stripped the interior today, was really pleased with the cars performance, power slides are definitely more fun in the Westie than the Evo and just love having a car you can take to pieces to clean. I'm aiming for February, I assume it is always sunny and mild at Elvington? Quote
juansolo Posted January 13, 2002 Posted January 13, 2002 There is a very good chance that the PPE (some new piccies of it in the BaT gallery BTW) may be making an appearence in Feb If it does I'll take you out for a blast in it, it's slightly less sedate than the Xantia Thanks for the offer of the ride, I may just take you up on it As for the weather at Elvington, I predict cold and misty. Other than in summer that's all you seem to get there Quote
blot Posted January 14, 2002 Author Posted January 14, 2002 Solo Don't know why you can't just be satisfied with the Xantia given that you beat every car on the track by half the back straight on those first two laps. Some people are just too darn greedy for speed Quote
jeff oakley Posted January 14, 2002 Posted January 14, 2002 I drove up from Bristol to do a trackday at Elvington in October with some freinds from Barnsley. Now being Yorkshire I am used to the cold but Elvington is like a tarmaced Siberia with what is called a lazy wind ie it goes through you. It was wet cold but terrific fun. Good grip from the surface even when wet and as already noted vast areas to run off with little to hit other than cones. I was seeing about 110 mph on the long straight with the bends wide enough to really throw the car in. Plus point is the petrol station is just half a mile away with a small shop. There was no food vans present but again the petrol staion did pasties etc. Might be handy to put some tape on the rear wings to stop the pebble dash a bit. Have a great time jeff Quote
jeff oakley Posted January 14, 2002 Posted January 14, 2002 Just noticed I am from Yorkshire as opposed to being the whole county Quote
