V8 Vs 2 Litre

Is it worth mentioning Hayabusa ?  £2500 for 185 bhp out of the box . . . just plop it in, comes with a 6 speed sequential gearbox and, complete with said sequential gearbox, weighs less than a base Duratec lump  :0  ;)

>> The red car would whip the ass of the V8 on the circuit or >> road

well my174bhp 1.8 Zetec certainly had the legs over Jons (now Buzzs) V8 at Cadwel and that was on 32Rs. However when I was gooning around Elvington on non sticky rubber Jon was past me in a flash!

Greg

FWIW

I `had` a VX westy, circa 180 bhp on Webers/Alpha

Brilliant, fantastic fun....noisy, revvy, a torque curve to dream about and a power curve that was linear  :p

In my `tuned` V8 ginetta (claimed 220 bhp) it is entirely effortless, fuss free and I`ll admit less exciting. Its more subtle though cos its torque is awesome. You can pull away in third and pootle around all day in 5th and it STILL pulls like a train.

I`ll bet a V8 any day on a hill however. My old rover 1969 P5B coupe (165bhp/1.5 tonnes and 115 mph) could embarass many flash cars on a long motorway gradient and no GTI of ANY kind at the time could match my old injected 2.0L Maestro up a hill. (I owned two , underrated handling and stonk, they rusted though )

Its all about torque...............

IMHO deffo 4 pot for track, V8 for roads (looooong circuits perhaps) although I intend to stand my corner with you lot next year on a track or two.

;)  ;)

Will  :)  :D  :p   this    :xmas:    :t-up:  do  :durr:      :p  :p  ;) windy  :arse: . Have u  done any research yet and where are you?

The power obtained from a bike is awwwwwwsome for the cost, so I am not brave or stupid enough to comment on this. The 4AGE engine is also an impressive lump, but neilb, does it weigh 60kg inclusive of clutch & flywheel then? If it revs to 8.5k whats its torque like? and how much does it cost to get to 250bhp then, based on a complete system i.e. engine, ecu, turbo absolute everything, co's I looked at raw engineering and their cost for say over 200 bhp was expensive I thought.

First off RAW only resell the parts made by JPS, the engines can be pickup for £200-£250 with all the bits and lift by one person.

The bottom end of the engine needs very little work on it, new rod bolts from Toyota at around £3 each and that the lot, this is good for upto 10k rpm - the winner for me.

New Cams will see 160-170 BHP without an mods to the engine

To get 200+ BHP new pistons are needed for the durration of the cams about £500, the cams and headwork is the same as the others,

Then the TB's, management, bell housing will cost the same as for any engine.

Richard Macer is the man that you need to talk to don't have his number to hand but can get it if you need.

Cheers

Snowy - also depends on what you drive now and your expectations...

I'm with Neil on the Toyota stuff but even the cheapest Westfields on Autotrader (£5k xflows) are going to be heading for 200bhp/ton which would leave - for example - almost all BMW's bar the M series struggling to keep up in a traffic light grand prix.

On the other hand - if you currently have a GT3 and a deep pocket then go for it and buy the best 4 or 8 cylinder - neither will disappoint. But you could splash out rather less and still go almost as quickly - especially through the twisty stuff.

Just a thought...

I've recently bought a Stuart Taylor fitted with the 20 valve 4AGE engine. It's my first kit, so I can't give you to much of a comparison, but it's certainly a lot of fun.  :D

It its standard form it is pushing 155bhp. Coupled with the lightness of the engine it provides more than adequate performance, even rev limited to 8,000rpm. It's certainly fast enough to frighten most of my friends.

The engine sounds great, and power delivery is very smooth. It's not as quick as a Fireblade I tried, but it is far more pleasurable to drive.  :D  :D  :D

Jumping in here at Windy's defence I thought his replies were fair an honest. But reading your responses I felt they were a little harsh,,, for when you get to meet him I hope you will see he is genuine with a vast amount of knowledge and is prepared to give unbiased views on many topics. He is also one of the best drivers I have had the pleasure to be driven by.

Ash - I don't think my views are personal towards Windy they were not meant to be and surely not harsh. They are in response to him stating that my disclosed educated knowledge is "pub talk", surely you must regard that comment as harsh. His views are in my opinion biased and I am surprised at your comment, but you do know him and not me!

I have not stated anything negative about the VX engine because I know nothing about them, my comments that they are poxy and a religion is light hearted banter. But my short time as a WSCC member I have noticed there are a lot of VX power units about, so they must be good.

I had and have researched my engine and weighed up the pro's and cons before I spent my money on it's developement, so I do know what the Duratec can and can't do with old or new parts.

Ash, his comments written on the web about the Duratec are rubbish and surely I am entitled to state that. Also stating Steve Broughton as his source of knowledge is unbelievable as Steve Broughton is developing this engine for the Sport 2000 series. This engine has replaced the Pinto on the Sport 2000 series and used for two seasons now, with amazing reliability, this at 7500rpm peak power.

I have never stated he was not a good driver if thats what your implying.

This forum is about passing on tips and gaining knowledge and some lively debate does'nt hurt, if I have offended you, him or any one I apologise, it was not meant to come across that way.

I was thinking the same sentence myself when I was sitting next to Markko Martin :D  but I was in the passenger seat :p
