New car is not a Westy...............

Recommended Posts

Picked up my latest car yesterday, a Ginetta G27

My westy was sold to Olli (sniff) cos it was `too` impractical (according to the wife)

Part of the reason was that it was all done/finished as far as I wanted to go with it and I needed a new project  ;)  ;)

Without being patronising this site is soooooo good I will continue to stay a westy member and hope you can help with advice if I get stuck this winter.

Brief spec..........

225 bhp (allegedly) V8

Type 9

Double wish bone front suspension with M16 calipers

Marina live rear axle with drum brakes   :0  :0

So it has bits and pieces in common with Westy`s.

Its a great handling car but needs sorting before trying too hard as it spins the wheels accelerating up to 3rd gear and really needs an LSD as it is twitchy and likes to go sideways.....

I`m gonna try to fit IRS this winter but if its not possible/practical can anyone advise what LSD fits marina axle.

Its acceleration is awesome, much quicker than my old 180 bhp VX in a straight line and its got a radio and carpets :p

I was thinking of going VX (still might if someone can point me in the direction of a `good` engine) but its such a novel experience of a lazy low revving engine that I might stick with it. :p

Hmmmmmm...........now where was that biggles flying helmet catalogue  :arse:  :arse:  :arse:

Can't see the Marina axle lasting very long.........Lotus 7 guys have no end of trouble with them. Have a look on Blatchat for info.....

You can fit Escort diffs and LSD's etc etc in to the Marina casing. It is a relatively common conversion.

Westfield use the R380 gearbox on their factory produced Seights. This box also seems to be the most popular for

home builds as well. Good and solid, very difficult to break.

If reverse is left and up, then my guess would be an LT77 box, as used in the SD1. FWIW, R380 is right and down.

And I can't believe a V8 would not rip a Marina axle apart!

Graham.

R380 ???  :durr:  Whats that then

You might be right about the SD1 box, it does seem logical  :durr:

A bit more research and I am led to believe that `most` live axle cars had/have pinto or zetec engines on a type 9 to a marina axle which is marginal at approx 155 bhp (output of 1800 zetec etc)  :0

The IRS axles are ford and some even had the jaguar set up.

Never thought about a capri axle.

When `they` allow me to access `their` database/forums I will know more.

Thanks for the advice so far, I`m sure I`ll be talking to all you V8 owners out there over the next few months.

LT77 = early Rover gearbox

R380 = later Rover gearbox, beefed up to take 'grunt' of V8....

Marina axle = deffo chocolate :D

What axle did the MGB V8 use as a matter of interest? ???

Ah Ginetta....

Had a few of these-

The chocolate flavoured one is best

I think Sainsburys are doing a 2 for 1 offer at the moment.

Hi Dave

A mate in the village has a trailer he is interested in hiring out to all and sundry.  Its big but available when I fix the jockey wheel I broke when picking up `the` car

I prefer a Latte meself, I mean the cars got soooooooo much room I might even fit a cafetiere  ;)
