Are we playing Armitage rules cos I always end up Nidd... ...also think this might get as silly as the game can get and should have it's own post...? You could start such a thread if you like... I think I'm barred from doing that after starting The Three Word Never-Ending Westy Story thread, a monster which, like Godzilla, lays quietly in hibernation -for now... Quote

echoz Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 amnd took in a nice eyeful of stars tonight whilst walking the dogs, quite stunning Quote
scott beeland Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 Betelgeuse, up and to the right of Orions Belt, mostly because of the orientation of the Earth and Orions current position. So I was right in so far as if you look at Orions belt tonight, Betelgeuse is up and to the right (just) of the 3 stars that make up the belt part... I just bought "star walk" app on my I phone (est reviews) Not sure I'm convinved about its accuracy though. What I assumed to be Betelgeuse is way, way up and right of "Orions Belt", `and there's a REALLY right star low in the west sky that it just cant see Quote
Blatman Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 It may (and I'm GUESSING here) depend if the app is using some method of working out where the phone is on the planet. Without that, I GUESS it MIGHT be stuck with the "base co-ordinates" programmed in to the application code when it was written, so the exact position of stars in the sky compared to what the app shows may differ slightly. The programme I use is based on a view of the sky as seen from a town called Guereins, just north of Lyon in France. So the view from the effluent south is slightly different to what you can see on my picture, especially when you get close to the horizon. But it's close enough for anything a few degrees above the horizon and it's certainly plenty close enough to work out what's what up there, including the relative position of Betelgeuse Quote
oldman Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 k****l!Saw the moon the other neet and it wos rubbish Quote
scott beeland Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 Just dowloaded stellarium, then been out and had another look with star walk....And now convinced that Sirius is the big bright b****r and I've been looking past Betelgeuse and seeing Capella Quote
Captain Colonial Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 Surely all you need do is say Betelgeuse three times...? Quote
