much more appealing than wasting it away down the pub as seems the norm with people my age :D:oops:

there is absolutely nothing wrong with wasting money down the pub.  in fact i see it as a sound investment.  i was only moaning the other day that i cant remeber the last time i sat in a pub for 12 hours straight getting more and more drunk and what a sad indication of becoming an old fart that is.

i miss all day drinking  :(

oioi

Coh just did a qoute on an MR2, if i were to inusre now with 1 years no claim would be 2k, if i wait a year and have 2 years ncb it would be 1400 :)

Can you pay off a big chunk of insurance in one go to lower the monthly payments does anyone know? :)

and haha oioi there is indeed nothing wrong with all day drinking :) in a nice pub with decent company :) I was more referring to going to some crappy nightclub where everything costs the wrong side of a fiver, it costs 5 quid to get in, and some jumped up d!ckhead will try start a fight with you because you dont have a spare cig you can give him :D

Reminds me of the snow last year around February time, 12 lunch time till 2am without leaving :D living off bacon fries peanuts and salt n vinegar crisps, and as much cider as you could muster :D:laugh:

And just two days ago weren't you bemoaning the student fees? Now you're proposing to spend 2 grand on a car. I'm confused.

Not having a go, just confused...

Blatters, not proposing. merely dreaming :) the likely hood of me actually ending up with 2k to spend on a car are slim, and ill probs still have the micra when i finish in 4 years time, but theres no harm in dreaming right :)

Just like to give my self something to aim for :)

any of these would qualify for classic insurance which would save a youngster a fortune

Jeff I think you will find that you cant get "Classic insurance under 25" looked at it for my daughter, although she is only 15 she wants a classic beetle so I will probably restore one for her for when (if) she passes a test  but she will have to pay full whack for insurance.

Jay - My oldman had a very tidy mk2 Escort RS Turbo when i was younger, hence it is a car I've always wanted to own myself, always find myself looking at them online lol.

Think that might have been a Mk3 Escort RS Turbo!!!

I stand corrected, t'was a series 2, not a mk2 :)

I've been mulling over exactly the same thing with exactly the same budget and have decided that a 106 GTi or Rallye is what I'm going to go for.

I just need to find a half decent one. :)

Posted

106 gti is outta the question for me as its the boy racer mobile of choice round here :o

always wanted a 205gti but apparently theyre not very good? ???

been looking at 306 gti6's the last week or so as i mis my old 306 :) was told i should get a 306 hdi instead and tinker with it tho... is it possible to get near gti6 performance out of the diesel without spending a fortune?

205GTi's are great if it's the 1.9 we're talking about... they may not be as good when compared to the modern 206 or the inbetween 306, but in the day they were ace. They could be made to handle and with an Mi16 engine could be quite the wolf in sheeps clothing... but I digress...

If you can find a nice one, the 1.9 205GTi would be a decent little run around, but I suspect the insurance will again prove prohibitive...

Another thing I found with my old 306 was it was bulletproof, I naively never serviced it once. had 190k on the clock when i got it, 11 months later with 210k on the clock it finally died, well the engine was fine, but the gearbox died! solid lil car :) and I hammered it everywhere  (this I think was down to having a moped for 3 years that just kept going without fault, I forgot a car is different and needs looking after lol) now I've grown up a little bit, I think I cpould make it last aages :D

as daft as it sounds have you thought about maybe a bigger car? along the lines of a q car?

if your considering 306's etc maybe a big engined mec something could be fun?

i had a v6 mundano, it wasnt the fastest of things but could be pretty quick and really smooth and as it was the ghia x was full leather etc

i saw some 625s before for ~4K

edt: eg. lexus IS200 ~2K with 95K on it? or even a GS?

volvo c70 T5 ~2K

alfa GTV?

98 merc clk 320 sport auto

Lexus 2.0 only has 150ish brake. Sport versions handle well and of course they're RWD with the Sport having an LSD

Toyota reliability, well appointed and  good fun when you get them wound up but won't set the world on fire in the traffic light GP. Used to love blasting along the A roads in Blatgirls IS200 Sport. I'd have another one... There are lots of auto's around but you can get them in manual too.

The IS300 only comes in auto :(

ovloV T5 and C70's... would be an interesting choice for a 20 year old...

Alfa GTV... too much pain...

Mid 90's Merc, again, possibility of lots of pain...
