Good evening one and all :)

Just sat babysitting for the evening and been looking around the usual car sites for my next car when funds allow.

I am the first to admit I don't really know what I'm looking for. I just want something with a bit of poke that's a bit old fashioned (read box shaped/non curvy/before 2000)

Will be saving around the 2k part before I look into buying it, cheaper the insurance the better but aslong as its not sky high (ie over 2k) where theres a will theres a way :D

So my question is what should I go look at?

Any and all opinions more than welcome as always, as I'm sure all you guys (and gals) being petrol heads, would have had the same criteria when you were 20/21 :D

Look forward to seeing what everyone has to say :)

Of course this is all invalid if SteveD builds me a mini and gives it to me for xmas :D:D [dreammode/off]

:xmas:

I like most of the old skool hot hatch cars as that was my era, the gti"s of the 80s/90"s in particular,  my favourite was the Mk1 Golf and also have a soft spot for the Mk1 Xr2, not sure if any of these would qualify for classic insurance which would save a youngster a fortune  :suspect:  :suspect:  pretty sure you would get a mini on classic and if you can buy one at the right price and restore they are a good little earner  :t-up:  :t-up:

your problem is something with a bit of poke and cheap insurance does not go together

Jeff has a good point about a classic as long as you have the ability to keep it on the road yourself - they will be easier to fix yourself but they will go wrong more often  :p

ok.... as Jeff C says a good XR2 Fezzy / XR3i Escort OR MK2 Escort 4 door {for your budget} , log into OLDSKOOLFORD.... they wont touch MK3 Escorts but rammed with MK2 Escorts and Fezza's.....

Depends also what you mean by "with a bit of poke"

the old escorts / fezza's in your price range will prob be 1.3 maybe 1.6 xflow / cvh engines, A good 2.0ltr pinto escort you will need double or three times your budget plus insurance to match the performance.

How about an old shaped Honda CR-X - If I remember a two seat coup with a screaming engine, AND the insurance was cheaper than the other hot hatches.

Good call, Ins gp 12!

I had that engine is a Rover 216gti   and although the rest of the car was pants the engine was a cracker(130bhp)!

Should go well in 'ikle coupe.....

Doesn't tick all your boxes.

but they are cheap as chips, reliable, cheap to run,. very communicative, rear wheel drive ,good handling, superb steering feel, parts are easily and cheaply available....

Mid engined tin-top fun for less than the cost of a set of premium tyres.....

Not boxy and a bit pricey on insurance maybe; but this one owes me less than 650 quid all in including nice sound system and bluetooth....

Oh and it has (working) aircon and cruise control!!

nothing wrong with the mr2's  howabout a mx5?

on the insurance front is it going to be a second car on  a limited milage? maybe more car choices will be open to you than you think if it is.

no idea on the insurance front but what about a 200sx or 300zx from nissan?

Jeeeeez what a horrible colour.

Think Alfa called it "Shutter".

Mixture between Sh*t and Butter!

would have to be a red or black one with the same wheels

And just two days ago weren't you bemoaning the student fees? Now you're proposing to spend 2 grand on a car. I'm confused.

Not having a go, just confused...

Jeff - I've wanted an old golf since as long as I can remember :) been looking at old fiesta's too recently.

Jay - My oldman had a very tidy mk2 Escort RS Turbo when i was younger, hence it is a car I've always wanted to own myself, always find myself looking at them online lol.

Jenko - Like the CR-X, my missus sisters boyfriend is a big jap head so would have someone who could point me in the right direction finding a good one :)

Cleggy - Like that Alfa but i expect the insurance may be outta my price range lol, still will have a looksee :)

Dave - that looks a very tidy MR2 :) always assumed that would be outta my league, but looks smart as :)

Dom - as it stands the car will be staying at home as i have no need for it down uni, but need something for when im home to get around + get to any work i may have. :)

Got the Micra atm, so no harm in keeping that on the road and buying something that needs a little work to throw my money at when I get a job :) much more appealing than wasting it away down the pub as seems the norm with people my age :D:oops:

So much choice aye :)
