Paul Morcom Posted December 21, 2010 Posted December 21, 2010 Also snow tyres are made of a softer compound which allows them to flex and grip better than standard road tyres. Quote
RedditchJay Posted December 21, 2010 Author Posted December 21, 2010 correct Paul, even today a minus 6c at the moment my tyre blocks are still soft and plyable.... I think on Saturday when a total of 11 inch snow dropped even with Winter tyres I would have struggled on ground clearence, thats were my Defender won hands down... ........... but on the compact snow and ice the winter tyres are holding their own very well...... blankczechbook Posted December 21, 2010 Posted December 21, 2010 i also have snow chains in the cars, just in case the winter tyres aren't enough. but it does get a pain taking them on and off.. but practice, practice and i'm getting quicker to do it.. - great fun with them on. maybe a case in the uk for more sales of the allweather tyres, rather than full on winter tyres.. they are a halfway house, but you can use them year round without the rapid wear that winter tyres can suffer in hot summers. saves having to fork out on extra rims/fitting charges. the uk doesn't really have hot summers or cold winters.. Mark (smokey mow) Posted December 21, 2010 Posted December 21, 2010 I've been giving my new conti's a propper tryout over the last couple of days and have to say I've very impressed with the grip and handling they give compared to my summer tyres. I've driven past a couple of cars today that were stuck with their wheels spinning. I had to drive out to a large country house today that had a long winding driveway about a mile long which was covered with packed snow, I took the opportunity to see how easily I could get the car to slide and whilst I could get the wheels to spin, I couldn't induce any understear on the corners and it effortesly turned in as normal. Very happy Quote
