Roll over bars

hilux

Recommended Posts

Before Blatman says anything I have tried a search  and I got everything but `roll bars`  :0

I see FIA? spec roll bars are recommended over the standard one (I have a standard bar) so I`m in the market for one.

Who makes them apart from Westfield. :durr:

Do they simply replace the standard ones or is it major surgery or do they have to be built into the car from day 1?

I have seen types that have`rose jointed` rear struts, or with fixed struts, others with additional small hoop over drivers head etc.

Are there suppliers that can quote for a westfield off the shelf?

Thanks in advance (I didnt build mine so I`m not sure)

They are there, honest  :D

Apart from Westfield you might try Paul at Plays Kool  ;)

Your old one will un-bolt with a braced version simply replacing it - except for the bootbox which you would either

a. Replace with a flat sheet of ali or carbon (try Plays kool) or something else

b. some very careful marking out and boot box cutting could see the boot box re-installed.

There are a few varieties on the scene best one IMHO is to have removable rear struts - leave in place for track days and use a cover for the boot box - once track day is over - unbolt rear stays and put back boot box  :D  :)  best of both worlds and no tricky cutting of box - when you come to sell car re-fit standard roll bar and sell FIA type separate  ;)

I've still got my boot box with the holes cut out for the FIA type struts if you need a template for cutting etc.

Your more than welcome to borrow it - give me a shout!

Westfield supplied mine and I would recommend the rose jointed removable stays.

Westfield also supply 4 "trumpets" which slot into the bottom rose joint and act as spacers. (about £10)

This saves pi$$ing about with lots of washers.

Would you say then that if I bought the `westfield` one that I could use Dave O`s box :0  as a template.

Also am quite tall is there a recommended height above my  helmet :0  :0 or head that I should achieve etc or do they come in different heights

(I know I could ring and ask various firms tommorrow but I value others experiences/recommendations prior to buying so thanks in advance for your recommendations)

Hilux     :xmas:

Whichever supplier you choose for your roll-bar it's always best to double check then triple check everything before cutting your boot box - don't cut anything until you have your roll-bar  ;)  :)

The recommended height by the MSA above your head with crash helmet on is 50mm, many of the smaller specialists can adapt a roll bar to suit your requirements, some by simply welding on a smaller hoop above your head.

My advice would be to have a ring round see who can do what for you, and wherever possible ask for certification that all components used comply with current MSA requirements  ;)

What price you put on safety  ;)  is the price you will pay for the product you require  ;)

Dave o,

Where are you based because I was just about to cut my box blind to get the struts through.

If you are nearby would it be possible (after Hilux of course) to use yours as a template?????

My bar is the standard Westfield one with removeable rear stays. I've also got cardboard templates for cutting the carbon panels around this bar - somewhere in the garage!

I am based in Herts Nr Hatfield.

Ha!

Those spacers wouldn't fit in the brackets on mine. After much huffing, puffiing and cursing, I gave up and used washers...  ???

I would still check to see if any templates are relevent to other cars, as I know from helping my mate build his Megablade, that the rear end of the bodywork can have a fair amount of variation on where it is mounted, so a bootbox that is cut correctly for one Westie won't necessarily mean its correct for many/any others. Probably better to take out the boot box, fit the rollbar and make up carboard templates specific to your car so you can then cut the bootbox to suit.

cheers

Chris
