RichP Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 Hi all I've tried tech support everywhere else so the obvious place to ask next is of course a car forum! So, I have 20MB cable broadband from Virgin, a Netgear WNR2000 Wireless-N router, a PC, a laptop and a VOIP phone. The PC and laptop work fine, both using the WiFi and LAN connections. The phone doesn't work. If I plug the phone directly into the Virgin modem it registers itself and works fine. Plugged into the router it won't work. I've got the router allocating the phone a static IP address and I've added that IP address as the DMZ server. No difference. I've tried disabling the SPI firewall - no difference. I've opened up all the VPN options - no difference. I've tried port forwarding - no difference. So, I'm stumped. I don't really know what I'm doing and I'm stuck. The phone used to work with my old Netgear Rangemax MiMo router with no problem, but I don't want to go back to using that as I had big problems with dead WiFi spots and poor signal. I realise it may be a long shot but can anyone offer any other stuff to try? Many thanks Rich Quote
Blatman Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 I know it sounds obvious but what settings does the old router have that the new one doesn't? What make of VOIP phone is it? Does the new router have any switching facilities? Did the old one? Thinking voice VLAN here... I take it the VOIP phone uses an ordinary RJ45 and CAT5 cable for connectivity? Quote
RichP Posted August 18, 2009 Author Posted August 18, 2009 To be honest, daft though it may seem, I've not compared the two. Just thought that since the new router is the latest greatest thing (!!!) it would be capable of everything the old one was. I'll see if I can hook up the old one as well and compare the two. Is it possible to connect the old router to the new one to run just the phone from the old one I wonder. Phone is an ACN videophone - see here: Link Yep, it connects through RJ45 & CAT5. Not familiar with switching facilities - where do I look for that? Cheers Rich Quote
Blatman Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 Does the WNR2000 actualy support VOIP? Or do you mean "internet" phone calls like Skype/Vonage using a USB phone/handset. VOIP and SKYPE handsets are not quite the same thing AIUI... Quote
Blatman Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 Simultaneous posting... I wouldn't connect one router to the other personally, and, you'd need a crossover cable to do that anyway. I'd start by checking the settings back to back and play spot the difference... Looking at the Netgear page, I doubt that either router has any switching capabilities, but it was worth asking... RichP Posted August 18, 2009 Author Posted August 18, 2009 It's supposed to according to the blurb. No, it's not internet like Skype - it's a dedicated standalone phone not involving a PC. Quote
RichP Posted August 18, 2009 Author Posted August 18, 2009 I'll have a bash at spot the difference first. Quote
Blatman Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 I've had a quick dig around the Netgear site and help for proper VOIP phones attached to these routers is pretty thin on the ground, and I'm more familiar with Cisco routers and switches to be honest. But if anything springs to mind, I'll shout... Quote
RichP Posted August 18, 2009 Author Posted August 18, 2009 I've also been on to the Netgear forum as well but precious little help there. So much for "plug n play"!! Cheers anyway Blatters Quote
Blatman Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 Just checking the specs of the phone now... I take it you tried connecting both LAN and WAN ports on the phone to the router? Are all the LAN ports on the router actually enabled, IE, does the indicator light come on when the phone is attached? On a Cisco device, it's normal practice to have to enable the ports when a device is attached as they are shut down by default So much for "plug n play"!! We call it Plug 'n' PRAY... Quote
RichP Posted August 18, 2009 Author Posted August 18, 2009 Yep - tried both WAN & LAN Ports seem to be enabled by default - the router knows the phone is there and I've set it a static IP for the phone, which the router seems happy with. Everything seems ok, except that the phone won't register itself on the web network. I can only assume that this is something to do with the way the phone is trying to send and receive data and the way the router is managing that data. Something somewhere is being blocked but I can't figure out why. For whatever reason the way the phone is communicating through the router is different to how a PC does it. Frustrating - I've plugged the phone into friends routers (not this model) and they've worked fine. Quote
Blatman Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 Can you ping the phone? Can you ping the D/G? What routing protocol is the router using? I assume RIPv1... If you have RIPv1, no need to port forward I wouldn't have thought... What IP addresses and subnet masks are you using? Does the phone appear in the routing table and/or the MAC address table? Quote
RichP Posted August 18, 2009 Author Posted August 18, 2009 Not sure how I ping the phone or the D/G (what is a D/G?) The phone IP is 192.168.1.4 The router IP is 192.168.1.1 and the phone sees this as the gateway Both have the same subnet mask 255.255.255.0 The phone DNS is 64.111.80.5 but I don't know if this should be recognised somehere in the router or whether I need to set something in the router to match this? Quote
RichP Posted August 18, 2009 Author Posted August 18, 2009 Yes the phone appears in the MAC address table Quote
Blatman Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 D/G is the default gateway, so no worries there. The phone may not respond to an ICMP Echo request (a ping) but... open a command prompt (start > run. Type CMD and hit the enter key). Type ping 192.168.1.4 and see what happens. While you're there, ping 192.168.1.1, and 64.111.80.5 The DNS server is controlled by your ISP and is simply used to resolve domain names (www.yahoo.co.uk etc...) to an IP address so that the packets can route across the net.
