stu999 Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 Don't expect miracles - the Dominators/M&P's are not as good as conventional lights - period. I am in two minds as to wether to put my original lights back on - especially as they were actually slightly lighter than the M&P's... Quote
stephenh Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 Hi Stu, how are things? The M&Ps are smaller tho' so less wind resistance. Thats why I ordered a pair yesterday! Quote
Buzz Billsberry Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 scruffythefirst • Posted on Mar. 31 2009,12:38 I fitted HID's, admittedly not in M&P's. Best lights I've ever had. Steve Smith of CAT motorsport fame uses HID's in his M&Ps got to say they were V bright when I saw them in Le-Mans. He said they were a tight fit and I think he mounted the ballasts on the chassis + the price of HID's now are reasonably within reach of most peoples pockets. That’s if you want to fit them. There’s a place in Leeds which were selling kits @ £99 Buzz Quote

Taking the frontal area of my car into account, the small saving the M&P's would make would be like loosing half kilo of weight from a 44ton truck! Quote

As a matter of interest, what is the weight of these things as compared to a standard set of 5.25" light? Tiggs Quote
Buzz Billsberry Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 Taking the frontal area of my car into account, the small saving the M&P's would make would be like loosing half kilo of weight from a 44ton truck! At last common sense prevails well said Mr stu999 the amount of bull smoke and mirrors that goes on about loosing weight on cars on here amazes me. Most of the time it’s hardly worth it unless you’re racing/competing etc for road use its usually pointless unless you’re dropping big weight or unsprung weight. My SEiGHT weighs in at a hefty 710KG I managed to get 50kg of it since I've had it and it’s still got carpets!! What mine lacks in weights makes up with in lots of power & torque, however trying to reduce the weight any more other than swap the body out (pointless on a road car) to save some decent weight every other thing is just small amounts and a waste of big money. These are just my personal thoughts though and I like any 1(when I had my (XE powered) westy had this devotion to spend stupid money on a car! I went for M & Ps for the sake of aesthetics even the smaller than normal 5 3/4" lights still look like wokes! Buzz Quote
blankczechbook Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 - Im also not massivly impressed with mine, and a voltmeter confirmed i was geting around 10v accross them (engine running) having lost about 1.5 on the earth return and about 3 on the +ve (measured against the batter terminals). So im planning to look further into that but in the mean time some posh xenon gas bulbs have improved it a little (phillips x-treme power). that's a hell of a voltage drop isn't it?? must be worth running some extra cables to it in parallel to see if you can eliminate some of the losses on the cables.. no point warming up thin cables and buying better bulbs... i'd have thought as the better bulbs still won't be performing as well as bog std bulbs at 10v. it is a very good point to check, i will be looking closely at my light voltages soon too as i always found the lights a bit lacking when dipped. stephenh Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 Buzz, I think the standard Westfield supplied lights look very large in relation to the cross-section of the bonnet, particularly with an aeroscreen. The M & P's being smaller diameter look more in scale. As regards frontal area, they must reduce it, and every little helps! I have a roadgoing spec., but because of my aeroscreen and tyres I shall have to compete in Class F in the Speed Series, so why not reduce the frontal area more, and improve the asthetics at the same time? Quote
SparkyB Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 The reduction in frontal area is negligable, and bear in mind that the air that would have been disturbed by the larger lights will now be disturbed instead by the screen/rear arches, so it may actually be worse aerodynamically overall. A seven is never going to be a particularly clean car aerodynamically, and besides where's the fun in going in a straight line! I fitted M&P lights as the FW style bonnet wouldn't open past the standard WF lights! Quote

Its a lot isnt it. - I think a fair bit is lost in joints at the light end, plug into the loom, then a crimp joint where lights have been swaped from the oringanal. - It all needs looking anyway. The dash switch gets warm too. So im going to rewire with an additional relay, clean up all joints and test again. The posh lights are an improvment, if only because its a bluer/lessyellow light. Plus for £15 there an very easy fit! Daniel Quote
