Asterix Posted April 1, 2008 Posted April 1, 2008 Dear all, re. me twatting my engine at Croft. I don't have the time to diagnose, let alone do the remedial work myself, so am looking for an SBD equivalent in the Nottingham/ Derby/ Chesterfield triangle. Any recommendations/ "steer clears" much appreciated. Quote
Norman Verona Posted April 1, 2008 Posted April 1, 2008 Steer clear of the ex caterham dealer in Chesterfield. Name escapes me but he's no longer with the company. Someone will know who I'm rattling on about. Quote

Mark Stanton Posted April 1, 2008 Posted April 1, 2008 Wot you done At worst and for quick you could grab a scrapper block, clean it down and bolt on your head, throbbles, sump etc new gaskets and oil and you'll be running Assuming your head's o.k Quote
custardtart Posted April 1, 2008 Posted April 1, 2008 I can't think of anyone in the area. Might be worth giving Gary Bunn the Derbys/Notts A/O a call? Think his details are on here somewhere. Quote
Asterix Posted April 1, 2008 Author Posted April 1, 2008 Bent valves at least - got a m8 taking the head off as I type Quote
Guest Posted April 1, 2008 Posted April 1, 2008 As Mark said... what's the problem? at a guess going into the graavel trap got stones into the cam belt ,threw belt and did whatever to the head . as you say could be sorted by anyone but most of the value of that car was in the engine , Quote
Blatman Posted April 1, 2008 Posted April 1, 2008 Valves on a Vx head are easy, and do-able in a (long) day (been there, done that). Certainly do-able over a weekend for anyone even mildly competent. It'll hinge on piston damage I guess... Quote

On the inlet vernier, all 5 bolts were well attached. There were no bolts on the exhaust vernier. We retrieved more than one of the errant bolts from the engine bay…no shearing, no bolt damage, no traces of loctite. Me going into the gravel trap did not cause the bolts to fall out - they would've dropped out sooner or later (but they may have loosened or dropped out one at a time giving me more opportunity to notice). Terry Everall Posted April 1, 2008 Posted April 1, 2008 have you spoken to SBD about how the bolts may have come loose? and should they not have stayed in? gravel trap may not have been the issue How far did you get after gravel trap? I thought I saw you at Sunny as I passed. If so any damage at gravel trap was unlikely to let yoi go another mile or so Quote

I will be chatting to SBD but I just wanted to clarify that how they came loose is only an issue for me so that I can avoid it happening again (i.e. I haven't got any litiginous bones to pick). I'm actually wondering whether it's better, when sprinting, if you know you're bound to go off track and the engine running isn't going to help you avoid stuff, to hit the kill switch. Quote

Could save a lot of time/money............I speak from experience... P.S. If it's just the head that neds looking at then you should be able to ship to SBD, all depends on how quick they can look at it, it's prob a bad time in the year to get anything done quickly!!!!! ACW Posted April 1, 2008 Posted April 1, 2008 Whats the spec of the engine ? I would send the head to be re-worked to SBD as you will need new vavles, guides and seats done as a minium on the exhaust side. I'd also scrap the cam if it were me. I wouldnt worry about killing the engine on the way into a gravel trap as your unlikely to remeber unless your a very regular visitor. Quote
Cam Posted April 1, 2008 Posted April 1, 2008 What about QED....... Quorn engine developments in Quorn near Leicester. Got a feeling they have/had something to do with Vaux engines, don't know anything about em though These are the guys QED Quote
