Barry Ashcroft Posted March 12, 2008 Posted March 12, 2008 It's my parents old car and as such should be treated with due deference, otherwise I'm telling me mum... PMSL
pgh Posted March 13, 2008 Author Posted March 13, 2008 It's my parents old car and as such should be treated with due deference In which case perhaps I shouldn't mention that the Naples journey is a one way trip for the car
peterg Posted March 13, 2008 Posted March 13, 2008 Don't worry pgh, I bet it's always wanted to go to Italy... maybe it's a Ghia model
Blatman Posted March 13, 2008 Posted March 13, 2008 It's my parents old car and as such should be treated with due deference In which case perhaps I shouldn't mention that the Naples journey is a one way trip for the car <!--emo& Nah, you're OK. I've warned me mum that it's likely to end up as a smouldering wreck in a desert somewhere, so knock yerself out. Just takes lots of pictures so I can show her how her the final journey and ultimate demise of her beloved Escrot... So the offer still stands... a mechanically sound (MOT has several months to go), but slightly second hand 3 door 1.8 Diesel Mk3 Escort 3 door for £99...
pgh Posted March 13, 2008 Author Posted March 13, 2008 Ok. I'll send pictures over to my colleagues. How far do you reckon we'd get on a fresh battery?
Blatman Posted March 13, 2008 Posted March 13, 2008 Day or night time? Dunno, but obviously further during the day...
pgh Posted March 13, 2008 Author Posted March 13, 2008 Daytime! Just curious, I've never tried driving without an alternator before. Presumably being diesel, the plugs will keep glowing without much battery required (might be talking rubbish here). We need a suitable theme too; wonder how it would look painted up as a General Lee...
stu999 Posted March 13, 2008 Posted March 13, 2008 Presumably being diesel, the plugs will keep glowing without much battery required (might be talking rubbish here). Yup, you are...! The glow plugs only assist starting, and literally the first few seconds of running. Assuming that it is an older Escrot, you might be able to take the plunger out of the centre of the solenoid on top of the fuel injection pump. Then, no battery power required whatsoever. Once it is running, the only way you will stop the engine is by stalling it, seizing it, or running it out of diesel However, the solenood itself will drain minimal power from the battery. Assuming that you fit a new one (that has been on charge for an appropriate time), you are probably looking at 'days' of running time, as opposed to hours... However, using headlights will knock a hole in the above expectations...
pgh Posted March 13, 2008 Author Posted March 13, 2008 Yup, you are...! The glow plugs only assist starting, and literally the first few seconds of running. Ah superb thank you London to the Midlands could be a distinct possibility then! So if it isn't the glow plugs that cause the diesel/air mixture to explode what does, presumably just the pressure and heat of the cylinder? Thanks again, Paul
stu999 Posted March 13, 2008 Posted March 13, 2008 So if it isn't the glow plugs that cause the diesel/air mixture to explode what does, presumably just the pressure and heat of the cylinder? Yup, got it in one. A 22 to 1 compression ratio gets the air *quite* hot Fire in some atomised oil at the right moment and jobs-a-goodun!
pgh Posted March 13, 2008 Author Posted March 13, 2008 Wow, that's a lot of compression! Thanks for helping me to learn something new today
Blatman Posted March 14, 2008 Posted March 14, 2008 All you need is an AA card. Push it round the corner from mine, tell 'em the car you just bought has shat itself and you need recovering... we'll go to the pub while we're waiting... they'll either tow it or fit a new alternator gratis of labour costs. Can't see a downside for the life of me...
windy Posted March 14, 2008 Posted March 14, 2008 Just bought this for the crumball rally. 100 notes, 55k from new, all mots since day 1, brand new exhaust & alternator, 12 months mot, 8 months tax. There's better cars about than snotty old escorts!!!!! Also consider buying a car that is 15 years or older and qualifies for classic car insurance. You can get European car cover included for free & up to 5 named drivers on the policy for free providing they are over 25 years old.
