Andrew Posted January 8, 2008 Posted January 8, 2008 Jeff, where exactly is that you went walking with the wife and bairns. It looks like the sort of place me and my young ‘un would enjoy. Just up the road, head up weardale through Wolsingham into Frosterly, as you go through you will see a left turn down a bank towards Hillend follow that road for about 3 miles over the cattle grid and Bollyhope is on the left, we go up in the summer , kids run about and play in the stream etc. good westy roads too Cheers Jeff. Are those roads any good for Alfas too? Ros, the roads up there are perfectly suitable for Alfas, but the convoy of RAC recovery trucks may find them a bit of a squeeze! Cruel, I know... Quote

Mechanical Numpty Posted January 8, 2008 Posted January 8, 2008 Just giving a bit of encouragement... Great that you guys are getting out there running - but DONT over do it to start with - its the quick route to injuries. Make sure you have some good running shoes - go to a proper running shop and get them fitted - you can avoid a lot of pain that way! (Worth looking at the Runners World website HERE for lots of good advice and ideas.) See if you can run with some one or get some ear phones that clip in your ears so they dont fall out(Sony do some good ones) - You may / will feel c**p to start with but stick at it and its the best drug there is! I have been running for 6 years - gone from only being able to run/walk a mile in 20 mins to now having 5 marathons completed. You burn about 100 cal per mile so its a great way to chuck off some weight. Good to set yourself a target - aim for a 10k race - in say 4 months time - there are lots about - its a great feeling when you cross the finish line!!! Keep it up guys! Rog Quote
Bean Posted January 8, 2008 Posted January 8, 2008 Err.. It's all well me giving advice but I haven't really done any exercise myself this year. Really need to my finger our, cutting down on the booze might help too The problem I found with running was boredom if alone, going running with a mate is better but not for him when I'm f**ed after 10 mins I've asked for an MP3 player for my birthday Quote
oldman Posted January 8, 2008 Posted January 8, 2008 Interval training is really for the advanced runner who want's to increase his speed for racing IMHO not for yer beginner.I've done a few marathons and used interval training to bring the times down. It's exremely difficult to do and dangerous if you have not got a certain level of fitness to begin with. Rog respect my pal was at my level couple of years ago and hes the same, doing marathons, hes adicted though , went out with him last year when I was at my fittest up to doing around 5 miles , It was the last time I run, he absolutly kancked me, I tried to keep up and ended up with bad knees/aching back for a week that was what stopped me running a year ago , wish I had kept at it as up until going out with him I used to look forward to going out and I felt so much fitter Quote
Andrew Posted January 8, 2008 Posted January 8, 2008 Just done my daily 20 mins on the bike. Read a book to take my mind off the pain and it worked a treat, looked down and the timer showed 20.30, did a quick cool down and am right as rain. Should really try the running to assess what level I'm at, suspect I'd struggle with the week 1 assessment. -Pilot Pete! Father - Please log out when your finished!!! Quote

I used to play football three times a week and moved house from Leicestershire to Lincolnshire. It was to far to travel to play for my existing clubs and I never looked for a club close to me to play for. Since then I have just got plain lazy and have never really had the willpower to do owt about it. Dare say that if I was not part of this group reporting my progress and checking what the rest of you are doing I would be about to stop again. It's been a week and I have a low interset threshold. However, sharing my pain obviously works as I am one week in and still keen to keep going. Bring on week two11 Quote
petrolhead Posted January 9, 2008 Posted January 9, 2008 So hows it going Jeff. Starting to get any easier yet? Quote
JeffC Posted January 9, 2008 Author Posted January 9, 2008 So hows it going Jeff. Starting to get any easier yet? Hi Peter just been out and failed, decide to go across the fields route inc up two hills, rather than doing the roads but was hard going, was boggy and muddy and too hard going to do the 7 reps. managed 5 two mins with 1min intervals, and that was me collapsing.. lesson learned though stick to the easier going like paths and railway lines, also think I will stick to week two programme for the next couple of weeks, really struggling with fitness at the mo. Looking Forward to Friday as its my first weigh in since the xmas blow out .. was 14st 4. hoping to get sub 14st for the weekend, have really been watching what I eat last two weeks so should have made a difference Quote

I got on the scales this morning as its been a week and I have dropped from 14.4 and a quarter to 14 dead. Was really pleased with this but I think it's down to the fact that now xmas is over my beer and food consumption is back to normal rather than a result of the running. I must confess though I am somewhat worried about starting the week two program. Will let you know how I cope this evening. Quote
a4gom Posted January 9, 2008 Posted January 9, 2008 Just back from run 2 (week 1) legs are a bit like lead. I have to say I am using the word "run" loosly but its definitely more than just a spirited walk. Won't be getting weighed for a while though as I haven't really been watching what I eat or drink Like I said I'm not really pushing hard on the running, what sort of distance are you covering on your trips Jeff? Quote
cidersurfer Posted January 9, 2008 Posted January 9, 2008 At a guess, i reckon you'll be doing between 8 and 9 minutes per mile... Quote
kingofthetwisties Posted January 9, 2008 Posted January 9, 2008 I clocked my distance at 1.3 miles but this is on the road with no real big hills. Quote
