Bean Posted January 22, 2008 Posted January 22, 2008 Boing I just got back from a second 3 mile run, first one on Saturday. Back is aching a bit, nothing a glass of Port won't cure What's happening guys, updates! Quote
Pilot Pete Posted January 22, 2008 Posted January 22, 2008 Upped me game a bit this week, doing 30 minutes a night instead of 20 on the bike. Think I best join you lot at the running soon. Quote
JeffC Posted January 22, 2008 Author Posted January 22, 2008 ive joined the gym , doing an hour workout 3 times a week, I find it easier to run on the treadmill, been to gym now 6 times and really improved on all the machines im going on , bit embarrasing as Im sweating like a pot-bellied pig at a barbeque convention by the time my hour is up oh and still eating like a sparrow weigh in again on Friday see what this week brings , had a drinking and eatin session at the weekend so hopefully I will exercise it off by then Quote
Bean Posted January 22, 2008 Posted January 22, 2008 I just had cold chicken tikka fillets with brown rice, then some Brie on biscuits. Now I've opened a very fine bottle of Port, I think I see the problem Quote
TerryC Posted January 23, 2008 Posted January 23, 2008 Hiya Well I started this programme about last week. I am now onto the second week and I did the workout after nightshift yesterday. I am finding it easier than last week. My routine also includes 20 mins on a rower and various sit-up exercises for the abs. I do this after the running programme. Surprisingly, I feel quite good. For those that are using running machines ( I'm offshore on a vessel in the Med off Egypt at the mo), what speed are you running at and walking at? I'm currently running at 10.5Km/h and walking at 6.0Km/h. Towards the end of each running section, my heartbeat reaches 167 and by the end of each walking bit it reduces to around 128. Am I killing myself, it certainly doesn't feel like it. By the way, I'm 6 ft tall and weighed 105kg (16.5stone) when I started. I haven't weighed my self since I started as the ship has been rolling in the weather which doesn't make it accurate. Terry Quote
Bean Posted January 23, 2008 Posted January 23, 2008 I had some really weird disturbing dreams last night, woke up in a cold sweat! I guess Brie and biscuits with Port ain't such a good idea before bedtime Quote
a4gom Posted January 23, 2008 Posted January 23, 2008 Update for me. 1st week: 07/01/08 1st run the running was quite hard but the walk seemed to be too long 09/01/08 2nd run the running was harder as my legs were tired from 1st run but the walk still too long. No 3rd run as Autosport and alcohol took over 14/01/08 decided to jump to week 2, runs were hard and walks too short!! No 2nd or 3rd runs this week as I got flu, probably an allergic reaction to the excercise. 21/01/08 fit again (loose use of word), decided to start week two again running was easier (could probably do with pushing a bit harder) and walks seemed about right 23/01/08 2nd run of new 2nd week planned for lunch time. Haven't bothered with weigh in yet. To all the experts out there is there a best way of breathing when doing this sort of stuff? i.e. controlling your breathing long, short etc to prevent getting out of breath? Quote
Al Yupright Posted January 23, 2008 Posted January 23, 2008 I'm offshore on a vessel in the Med off Egypt at the mo), Impressed that you can run on a treadmill on a rolling ship! Takes all my concentration not to fall-over when I step off the thing on dry land! Quote
MVS Posted January 23, 2008 Posted January 23, 2008 Late to this thread as bit otherwise occupied, but I want to give you guy's a boost/carrot to keep you going. I started running again 9 months ago after a 5 yr break: Just as you guys were I couldn't do much, and started slowly. Height 5'10-11" Weight 13 st 11lb (My internal warning bell rings near 14 st) Gradually worked my way up to where I am now, running 3.5 miles 2-3x weekly + a 7 miler on a Sunday late morning before lunch. I can also recommended cross trainers for the crappy weather, or when you really can't be arsed. Zero impact, less boring than a treadmill, and build general strength all over. Needs to be a good one though @ a gym or about £4-500 job. Height hasn't changed Weight 11st 9lbs I feel a lot better & have lost 3-4inches of my belly ahem waist. I may be nearly 40, but know I can still lose another half a stone as I was 11stone in my 20's when I ran 10k stuff, but I used to train like a b@stard (6-10 miles every day) It's worth it so keep it up Quote

A couple of years back I did a 10km run, would like to do another. I plan on doing my 3 mile route three times a week. Have you changed your diet at all or cut down on alcohol? Quote
MVS Posted January 23, 2008 Posted January 23, 2008 Have you changed your diet at all or cut down on alcohol? Not a lot is the short answer, just cut my portion size very slightly to about 3/4 of what they were and trying not to snack between meals. As to alcohol, I never really drank in the week whilst going to work the next morning anyway as I find it difficult enough drilling people's teeth first thing without a bad head . At a weekend I have cut out ahem.... some ....wine... and tried to replace with beer when I do have a drink . Basically because of the alcohol content by volume. I found the Sunday run impossible after a heavy Sat night on wine as I had a right sided stitch all the time, presumably my liver struggling to process it Again keep it up it's worth it. BUT to keep the weight off you need to incorporate it into your lifestyle permanently, so you need to adjust your calorie intake/exercise regime to suit what you can achieve or maintain. Sadly otherwise your weight will yoyo up and down (mainly up) unless you keep it up, I am a faily good example of that Quote
westyblade Posted January 23, 2008 Posted January 23, 2008 yep Adam I know you are right, the guy at the gym reckons 2lb a week is ideal and i will be more likely to keep it off that way. [/quote Try taking the wallet out yer pocket before you get weighed youd be a clem lighter Quote
Bean Posted January 24, 2008 Posted January 24, 2008 Damn, my lower back is killing me today Ended up playing badminton at short notice last night, playing Squash midday and I've got a run with friends tomorrow night. Quote
JeffC Posted January 28, 2008 Author Posted January 28, 2008 hows everyone getting on then weigh in last week I lost another 2lbs. 13.5lbs so thats just under a stone off for me , 5lbs to go upped my programme at the gym finding it b****y hard still, burning around 500calories in the hour, for some reason i can do must of the machines but really struggling with the treadmill, Ive upped from a ten min fast walk to doing 1min walk 6km/h, then 1min run at 10km/h 5 times, on the last run I had a bit of a moment, was struggling a bit calfs were aching then went all dizzy and felt sick, when I looked at the machine heart rate was 182 bpm , scared me a bit have to say Quote
a4gom Posted January 28, 2008 Posted January 28, 2008 TBH Jeff I've wandered off the original program, I got a bit bored stopping and starting and my eyes are'nt that good so I was struggling to see the stopwatch on my phone with my retina's bouncing up and down. Last week I did three runs of around 25mins but rather than stopping and starting I slowed my pace a little and kept going. I may go back to the original plan again but am going to try and just speed up a little doing the same distance and see what develops. Not done a weigh in but I doub't its changed much as I haven't changed my eating or drinking. I can tell the difference fitness wise though. Quote
