Blatman
b*******. Guess my type 9 is not long for this world then...
davidgh
Maybe not. I guess sigma is probably quite large on something like a type 9 -- and by definition Dan will give a recommendation around two sigma below mean.

stu999
Remember Tran-X, Quaife etc are probably quoting bhp/torque figures with Mk2 Escorts etc in mind. In *most* Westy's, the box is likely to be having a far easier time carting a far lighter car around... However, engines with a vastly increased rpm range will play havoc with the Type 9's internals...
perksy
However, engines with a vastly increased rpm range will play havoc with the Type 9's internals... What about 2.1 Pintos doing 9000 rpm due to Missed gears Mate and the effects on the Flywheel
Westfieldman
To answer the original question I don't belive you need a 6 speed gearox with 2ltr Duratec [ I have around 240BHP and 160/170lb/ft] so far from standard I have an Elite 5 speed sequental dog box some of the advantages are Push pull gear changes Flat shifts on the way up the gearbox Huge choice of ratios to suit you and your engine Light weight Small and compact I don't have the exact ratios to hand but if you say first tops out at 60mph 2nd tops out at 80mph 3rd tops out at 95mph 4th tops out at 110mph and 5th tops out at 125mph All based on a rev limit of 7,000rpm Disadvantedes I have broke it 3 times [all covered by Elite] all gearboxes since the last upgrade are the latest type so you won't get an early less strong one Today I was at Cadwell Park and completed 170 track miles flat shifting almost all the up shifs with no clutch the car and gearbox completed the day with only fuel added to the car also to note the only cars to come past where a few Radicals and two very well driven Caterhams So the gearbox problems look like they are behind me
davidgh
Once more in English... Sorry Mark... The standard deviation (statistical measure of range of probabilities) on performance of a type 9 is likely to be quite large. Obviously, people like Dan are going to quote power/torque figures as maxima that they are reasonably sure will be handled by their products -- i.e. a number well below the average power handling capacity of the box. Thus, the average for Dan's boxes may well be 300/250, rather than the 250/200 he is commercially required to stipulate as maxima. Ergo, if you have an "above average" box, even with your power it might last very well. HTH

What about 2.1 Pintos doing 9000 rpm due to Missed gears Mate and the effects on the Flywheel Or was it the 9000rpm that caused him to miss a gear?
