IIRC, Mount Pinotabu's last eruption released more CO2 in to the atmosphere than the entire human race has from the day we started walking upright... Quote

Liam Posted March 13, 2006 Posted March 13, 2006 I can remember all those things vividly and a few more. Rag and bone men. Onion Johnnies. Having to dance with the girl with warts in junior school. Cigarette cards. Marbles. Spinning tops. Older brother coming home on leave from National Service with presents. Sun shine all summer holiday long. Policemen no smaller than 6'. The man in your road who had a new car. Going to a hotel on your holidays for the first time. Was it really that good or does it get better the older you are. I dunno. There were some downsides, like polio and TB and peasoup fog and but a can't remember many. Did anyone out there have a Gresham Flyer tricycle with a boot on the back? I once rode my one under the green grocers cart, pulled by a horse, and got a clip round my ear for it (come to think of it, the coalman had a horse and cart as well). Or later an Elswick Hopper? Or a Carlton or a even a Raleigh Record Ace with double butted 531 tubing and a double clanger? I had all those and I still have a Mercian that must be 45 years old by now. Would he like a cup of tea Quote

Fallout from the factories ,power stations, steam trains , what have you . Everything seemed to be coal powered. Very few houses had a bath and no running Hot Water. If you wanted I bath yer went for a "private " at the local council baths or used the Tin bath at home filled from jugs of water boiled ont fire (coal fire that is ) Came from a long line of coalminers myself so I know all about being covered in black filth . wouldnt want to bring them days back Quote

Paul Hurdsfield - Joint Manchester AO Posted March 13, 2006 Posted March 13, 2006 Remember school holidays; you'd leave the house only just later than a normal school day & disappear off into the fields playing till tea time. Fields, Kinell there were no fields in Collyhurst, in fact the only time I saw grass was when we went to the Park The bloke next door had a Ford 8 Cars, nobody in Collyhurst could afford cars. And I'm not joking Quote

Paul Hurdsfield - Joint Manchester AO Posted March 13, 2006 Posted March 13, 2006 Yep Crumpsall Hospital was where I was born It borders Harpurhey and Collyhurst on the Manchester side iyswim. Where I lived on Rochdale rd was only about 1 mile from Manchester City Centre Quote
