Man On The Clapham Omnibus

There's a group of worthy local ladies just outside my house this morning with a 'smiley face' speed measuring device. The problem is that they are a few feet away from a parked truck so the traffic is artificially slowed down anyway!

There is a speeding problem in this road as it's a rat-run in rush hours and has a primary school pupils walking along it twice a day, but I am not sure this is the answer. Might get my westfield out and test my bike speedo

Might post a pic later if I can get one without getting my teeth knocked out.  :p

How many ladies? If it's more than 5, then if they haven't informed the cops it's an illegal assembly in breach of the Criminal Justice Act. You could also argue that they are a safety hazard, endangering themselves and the motorists by distracting them, and potentially impersonating a police officer/speed partnership worker. I'd call the cops just for the hell of it. Say they have a gun, just don't say it's a speed gun...

:D   :D   :D

By the time I'd got outside they'd folded their tents, so to speak, and stolen away into the frosty morning.  :(

All I got was a quick shot from upstairs.

I'll have to wait 'til I get home to see the picture :bangshead:

Still, there's always tomorrow...

Have you tested it with the Westie? There's a few of those things near to me & they never manage to detect the car :)

I might do later 'cos they were out last evening at around six (rush hour) but I was in the familymachine. They would do better if they tried it during the quieter times. Far fewer cars but much faster in my experience. If they are around this afternoon I might get a chance to try if work permits.

That's not the road with all the speed humps is it?

That used to be a good cut through till they installed them

No David. Where's that? I'm quite close to the Fire Station west of the Old Town - about quarter mile along before it goes down the hill, if that's sufficient clue. :0

You don't mean Ledborough Lane do you? I'm flattered! Barry Gibblives along there and the estates have houses at £1M plus :D

They're there again this evening and I asked them what they do when they see a vehicle over the limit. Apparently they're conducting a survey to 'convince the council that 'we' need traffic calming'. A full statistical survey was carried out using the rubber strip detectors a mere couple of years ago and all the 85th percentile stuff was published. What these well meaning amateurs expect I don't know. It might help if they knew how to set the thing up properly. It was at an angle to the kerb this evening and working only intermittently as I watched from my window. Additionally, they are standing in front of it and wagging their heads about as they see a vehicle coming, and my experience with Doppler effect intruder detectors suggests that the relatively massive local movement will seriously impede effectiveness and, probably, accuracy. The good news is that they are not noting registration numbers, only vehicle type and speed.

Think yourself lucky you aint a highway engineer having to deal with these do gooders every day.

After all the whole of the public know more about highway design than I!!!!!!!!!!

The problem with the motorist of today is eductaion, we have to cater for the idiot hence traffic claming and so on.

I do not condone the use of the SID (speed interactive device) but it is better than portable cameras as a deterent and is certainly cheaper.

We have two muppets that spend their life pandering to the next do gooder group installing the signs around the county.  Incidently they are not accurate as in most cases they are measuring the speed along the hypotonuse of triange as they are rarely at vehicle height.  Most authorities limited the speed reading display to +15 mph of the posted speed.
