funbobby Posted February 14, 2006 Posted February 14, 2006 Agree with Jamey J - Ireland works.....nicer atmosphere in the bars and I smoked less as you have to go outside. Im fine for a ban here! Quote
JeffC Posted February 14, 2006 Posted February 14, 2006 My local pub has gone no smoking. Much better not coming in and having to jump in the shower and hoy your clothes straight in the wash.. Down side is a lot of the smokers wont go near the place so his trade is effected. people Smoking when im eating gets my back up everytime Quote
Man On The Clapham Omnibus Posted February 14, 2006 Author Posted February 14, 2006 The Lancet said: "Ordinary citizens were better at facing facts than the government, "perhaps because the UK public does not have to consider directly the £9.3bn per year raised in tax revenue on tobacco". Compared with that figure, the £1.5bn that smoking-related diseases cost the NHS each year seemed "paltry", it added. Where will all that tax (£7.8 billion) come from if everybody stops smoking? Martin Keene Posted February 14, 2006 Posted February 14, 2006 I would vote for a total ban, but I voted for a Total Ban execpt for Private Clubs, for exactly that reason, they are private and therefore even if there is a total ban they could probaly argue there way around it by the fact they are not open to the general public. Either way, so long as I can go out for a pint without coming back smelling like an ashtray I don't much care how it's worded/dressed up/spun/etc... Quote
Emma Posted February 14, 2006 Posted February 14, 2006 Well, I'll go stand outside for a fag on my own then!!! Personally, as a smoker (and by the looks of it the only one here), I dont care if I have to stand outside - my choice to smoke!!! However, the comments re banning altogether seem a bit strong!!! As I said, its my choice!!! Places like the Fox n Grapes where we have our area meet works quite well, they have a smoking area, which is set fairly well away from the majority of people eating - it seems to do the trick, and I haven't heard anyone complain there! funbobby Posted February 14, 2006 Posted February 14, 2006 and I smoked less as you have to go outside. Oi Missus - I smoke too so your not on your own - Cant beat at tab with a pint!! Quote
MAT1800 Posted February 14, 2006 Posted February 14, 2006 I smoke and I want to have that choice, although I do want to give up....most of the time. However people who don't smoke shouldn't be subjected to other peoples smoke, and although smoking/non-soking areas may be possible, not many places manage to do it. So I'm for a ban in public places, with exceptions for those pubs, restaurants that want to. Quote
DavidR Posted February 14, 2006 Posted February 14, 2006 I would vote for a total ban in all work places. including open air if it's within 20 feet of someone else. As for the private club exemption - it's still a work place for the people that work there. I believe that any industrial process emitting as much smoke as a person would be shut down under health and safety rules. But then i'm a lifelong non smoking pub user who would like to use pubs without having to endure dreadful smoke smells. That's my fivepenn'orth..... DAvid Quote
vodkatart Posted February 14, 2006 Posted February 14, 2006 Surly it isn’t just about a ban on smoking, it the general belief that it's getting to a point where you can't decide on our own what to do, we are getting to a point where we are a nanny state. If you don’t like a pub, restaurant were there are smokers then don't go in, just go down the road and find another, just remember smoking is an addiction and the smoker has the same right to smoke as other have not to. Just remember this is the beginning of the end for you to think for yourself, what’s next!. Oh by the way I’m not a smoker, never have been a smoker and never intend to smoke. Quote
JeffC Posted February 14, 2006 Posted February 14, 2006 what about someone inventing smoke free fags.. or odourless smokes Quote
Bluerallye Posted February 14, 2006 Posted February 14, 2006 As an ex-smoker it doesn't bother me either way *but* it's always nice to see it from a hardened smokers point of view Obnoxious , self-righteous, whining little maggots, I’d quit smoking if I didn’t think I’d become one of you. See, I know you've employed some kind of eternal life fantasy because you've chosen not to smoke; let me be the first to pop that f*cking bubble and send you hurtling back to reality – because you're gonna die too. And you know what doctors say: 's**t, if only you'd smoked, we'd have the technology to help you. It's you people dying from nothing who are screwed. I'm Bill Hicks and I'm dead now because I smoked cigarettes. Cigarettes didn't kill me, a bunch of non-smokers kicked the s**t out of me one day. I tried to run, they had more energy than I. I tried to hide, they heard me wheezing. Many of them smelled me. (Sniffing sounds) "There he is, get him!" (Pants) "Oh, he's hardly f*cking moving, this is pathetic!" (Pants) "Look, he's still trying to get away, he's like a roach, step on him!" (Pants) "Squash him!" "Let's kill him and pee on him. Yeah!" People'll say the stupidest things sometimes too, "Hey, man, if you quit smoking you get your sense of smell back." I live in New York City, I got news for you-I don't want my f*cking sense of smell back. (Sniffs) Is that urine? (Sniffs) I think I smell a dead guy! Honey, look, a dead guy! starter Posted February 14, 2006 Posted February 14, 2006 Lets ban smoking, booze., BMW drivers and anything else thats not good for you ( or people don't like) and we can all live long and boring lives. Quote
jeff oakley Posted February 14, 2006 Posted February 14, 2006 Yep I'm for a total ban, but and it is a big but there is an issue of a trade off in health cost against lost tax revenue and further more the main thing to me is the freedom of choice, or more to the point loss of choice. We have a goverment who are taking away every freedom and imposing its will on the genral population. So when they ban sports cars noisey cars etc etc. We have to be sure we don't open pandoras box too wide as we might not really like what is in there. Quote
oldman Posted February 14, 2006 Posted February 14, 2006 On the smoking front...ban x flows Drinking....ban Pinto heavies Quote
vodkatart Posted February 14, 2006 Posted February 14, 2006 Mr Hicks a funny, realistic man and a sad loss to common sense. Quote
