This is the lid I use for sprinting when I started I just could not afford a better lid I have never had problems with scrutineering and it is very comfortable.

Don't get me wrong I would like a better lid but there always seems to be something else to spend my money on. I hope this does not degenerate into another discussion about you must have this piece of safety gear because its expensive. :(

It's not about price. It's about the standard to which the lid has been tested. The lid linked to in the opening post doesn't seem to make the minimum requirement for motorsport, which to me says that you should steer clear. Simple as that...

That looks an awful lot like my lid, but with all the stickers removed. Always wondered what it would look like with the stickers removed. Looks good, might have to try that...

PS: The stickers were applied at the factory by AGV, before anyone says stickers damage helmets!

"Stickers damage helmets" is a hangover from some years ago when it was possible for the glue on some stickers to have an adverse effect on plastic/polycarbonate lids. If the polycarbonate lid has stickers that were applied by the manufacturer, they'll be fine. However, aftermarket stickers may not be so kind to the shell. The rule of thumb for polycarbonate lids is, don't stick non manufacturer approved stickers to them...

For the purposes of discussion/my learning, I would like to know exactly what a helmet is protecting the driver from?

I ask, because the thread is seems to be taking the lean that 'unless it is Motorsport approved' it isn't really good enough.

Early last year, I went shopping for a lid for SWMBO. My first calls were to the local M/C shops. After the third shop, it became obvious that helmets to minimum motorsport standards are rarely found in M/C shops nowadays. In fact, the only one I did find was a pisspot, and the Mrs didnt want one of them :D

We eventually bought one from Demon Thieves. In the M/C shops, there were helmets with *staggering* price tags - and bristling with the latest technology, yet can't be used for motorsport. My thoughts were that it may be because the energy absorbing lining might be designed to cope with a different type of impact. But I've been told it is actually because M/C helmets dont offer the same level of protection in the event of a fire - I dont know for sure.

If that is the case, then fair play. But TBH, if I only ever planned to do trackdays, and that *is* the only difference, then my next lid would come from a M/C shop.

Because *if* the fire is hot enough to start melting my helmet, chances are I am in the crap big time anyway... ;)
