I am getting masses of junk mail to my home account from, I believe, an NTL IP address in the Cambridge area.

Some of the emails allegedly come from other club members or motorsport/kitcar related addresses, but, of course may not be from them at all.

It appears to be as a result of the McAfee named virus W32/Sober@MM!M681.

More information can be found about the virus at

http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_137072.htm

The latest version of the McAfee 'Stinger' tool can remove the virus and is a free download from

http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger

If you have an NTL account and wish to check, please PM me I will let you know the IP address.

Thanks

Liam

Yep we discussed it last week, I'm still getting them, 1536 this morning, I've set up my p.c. (norton) to delete them but it still has to d/load them first. Takes ages and its very annoying.

I have had them from a number of members email address which I recognise from here, so there must be at least 1 member with an infected p.c.

It would be appreciated if everyone could check there p.c. for the virus.

Yep, me too.  Bloomin annoying now, please everyone keep your antivirus software up to date.  If you dont have any and are too tight to pay for it then download AVG here

Glad I'm not the only one. Although it has tailed off a little bit over the weekend.

Its worse for me today. There seems to be a pattern with many of the registered users getting messages, so who on the site is infected ?

Avast is another decent free AV app when only for home use. Some of you guys that are getting hit badly, it might be worth getting one of the POP checking applications that allow you to check and delete spam / virus laden emails  on your accounts before you actually download them, something like POP Peeper for example.

Don't be daft. A decent Spam and virus filter and Bob's your uncle. Changing your e-mail address won't help, cos you'll still have to tell people it, they'll put it in their address books, and the next round of viruses that they catch will be sent out to you all over again...

Sitting in my inbox at home are currently 84 messages. This is since about 10pm yesterday. I estimate that maybe 25 of these are 'real' messages. The rest are spam and viruses.

Spam used to be an annoyance to me when I was on dialup, but these days, it doesn't (really) cost me anything to download them, and my PC deals with 99% of them automatically.

Can I set up Avast antivirus (which is detecting them) and Outlook Express to deal with them - automatically.

Not entirely sure to be honest. Most of my e-mail viruses get caught by my Internet gateway before they get onto my machine.

I use Outlook and Mcafee, and that combination 'quarantines' any infected e-mails. It could be that Outlook Express doesn't have that kind of functionality, but I don't use it so can't really say, sorry.

What does your virus scanner do to them when it detects them?
