Is F1 getting any better

I didn't catch all of the F1 race this weekend, but from some of the bits I watched it looked like it might have improved a bit from the previous years?

I actually saw at least one car overtake another, and cars sliding wide due to knackered tyres / making mistakes.

Also noticed the power band of the Toyota engine was from 14,000 to 18,000 rpm. Wow! It looked decidely off cam below 14,000 as well (relatively speaking of course).

You were lucky. I think there were only something like 5 overtaking moves in the whole race...

I watched many races on Sunday including the F1 on TV and by far the more entertaining was the Locosts and kit cars  :D  :D  :D  :D  :D  :D

could F1 get any worse ??

No chance, the scope for improvement was easy from the position it had got itself to.

As Mark rightly says, watching Locosts, kits or whatever at your local track will be much much better than F1. Shame they don'y show much on 'normal' TV.

To quote many a school report....

Must do better.

It won't be hard for it to improve drastically, but as usual, there will be one or two dominant teams, and the usual crop of no-hopers there just to make up the numbers.

Unless F1 is fundamentally changed for the benefit of the sport instead of for the benefit of the sponsors as usually happens, I won't be holding my breath.

And where did Ferrari finish..........Not first!!

Unfortunatly F1 will get worse before it gets better. The new contract Bernie (shoot the Tw*t) Ecclestone has agreed with Ferrari gives them absolute veto over all decisions made by other mfcrs and the FIA. I cant see the other teams agreeing to this and see a major stalemate on the horizon. Why should one man and one team get the cream? As things stand i can see the GPWC getting the other nine teams on their grid and M Schumacher racing on his own.

I would love to see F1 move more towards mechanicial grip and less aerodynamics, cars that do the race distance without needing to pit and less driver aids. This may cause drivers to spin but most of the tracks used by F1 are billiard table flat and have huge run off areas so there should be enough room for them to spin off without killing too many drivers and after all it's part of the attraction that drivers are taking a great risk getting in the car.

This years new regs have tried to liven things up a bit but when the teams get a better understanding of the new rules and their effect and sort out their stratergies i expect we'll be back to business as normal.

Thats my rant over, as i have been a fan since i was ten years old and i could cry at the current state of what should be the worlds premier motorsport.

I wouldn't believe all that you read. I had an interesting conversation with a chap from Cosworth Racing at the Historic show. They had a 2003 Jordan spec engine on the stand which they now admit produces 892bhp and revs to 18,000 when questioned about this years enginehe wouldn't put exact numbers on it but he did admit it was inexcess of 1000bhp and 20,000rpm.

Oh, and they already have a 2.4 ltr V8 on the dyno for next and thats 750bhp and 20,000rpm already!

They've completely screwed up the qualifying.  one on Saturday and then one before the race.  Whats the point of the one on Saturday? nobody is going to watch it :p

I can understand why they change rules to try and reduce costs, but why do they keep trying to slow the cars down and say it's in the name of safety, surely this is where driver skill is used.

Oh well the ever changing rules at least keep some Brits permanently in work.

I think Gilles Villeneuve, Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger would disagree with you there...

As for rule changes to keep costs down, it's b*****k*. Rule changes will *always* require lots of investment in new equipment and testing to get the best from the cars. This places the richest teams at an advantage. The only way to keep costs reasonably stable (NOTE. Reasonably stable is not reducing or preventing expenditure, but more it'll give the poorer teams a year or two to catch up) is to NOT change things for several seasons, so that technology diseminates down the grid allowing everyone to be able to play on a slightly more level playing field... sort of...

Ok Blatman you are right there, more risk is involved if there is a failure on a car at high speed.

but

I always thought F1 was suppose to be the ultimate racing.  Drivers are aware of the risks when they decide to be an F1 driver.

This was based on watching the on screen 'dashboard' rather than something I'd read.

I know that the noise these engines now make is not at all pleasant, they just 'scream'.  :(
