minolta Dimage Z2

No suggestions for silly money "better" cameras please. This is the budget we have and these two seem to fit bill for general photo/motorsport/scenic etc etc .

Where would your money go??

edited to add....Only difference really is  SD memory (Dimage) versus XD(Fuji)....Which is best>>>

We had one of the smaller Fuji ones and it was great.  Only thing is, they (digi cameras in general, especially zoom ones) really do eat batteries, so you will definitely need at least one good set of rechargable batteries.

Yep. Was planning to get some decent batteries in the deal and a big Memory Card. The camera spec's are soo close though It's a difficult choice

XD memory is not that popular and is therefore not as cheap as SD that is used in most things.......just something to consider.

Minolta are normally excellent but against the Fuji it looses on these two models.

Buy the Fuji  :t-up:

What makes it lose?

My PC tower has slots for reading SD/MMC cards and not XD cards (unless I buy an adapter)...So might aswell get the Minolta Dimage and spend the rest on big memory/ batteries

What ever memory type you choose, make sure you get the "fastest" you can.

Xd memory is far better than SD .its alot faster and the price has tumbled recently , had the same dilema and bought the fuji , after shopping around i got a uk model for 215 quid.

Bought a Z2 after seeing my sisters Z1, got the camera last July.  Looked an both Minolta and Fuji strangely enough and bought the Z2 because I found a really good deal (website priced it wrong by about £40 but still sold me the camera) I am by no means a serious user, pics of the kids, holiday snaps, parties etc.  I am very pleased with the results, and so long as you accept that you are getting what you pay for I dont think you will be disappointed with either camera.

For holiday snaps and events pics, why do you need anything so big?

oh, and i think fuji interpolat epixels 'in camera' tp u'p their pixel output... other cameras dont generally do this, so another manufacturer might have a better image resolution. - you can always interpolate in photoshop afterwards see.

My 6mp fuji, is only 4m pixels effectively.. it adds 2mp to each image!

dependes what you want to shoot too.. some cameras deal with white balance better too (for skys etc) some have faster responses, some have quicker memory access for multi shooting. this depends on the memory media too.. compact flash is best i believe.. xd is tiny, and SD is used in lots of MM products.

Memory is key too.. get at least 256 mb to start with..

i'd avoid aa rechargeable batteries too to be honest. pain in the bum! - but then you dont have much choice apparently.

Both cameras should have usb connections too.. so you wouldnt have to buy another card reader.. although pc card readers are often quicker than pc-cam interfacing.

its always tough to decide.. best of luck ;)

Camera will be used for holiday/family stuff but also some speed series/trackday stuff with the possibility of some multi shot. Novice capability is a must.

Are you saying that I needn't worry about my PC not having  xd reader slot as the Fuji has a usb cable?

Fuji. Shutter speeds 1/1000 s to 2 seconds. Continuous shoot 5 fps. max 5 images

Minolta" "                1/1000 s to 15 seconds. Continuous shoot 1.5fps. max 6 images

What's the advantage ? Other than I realise 5 fps is better than 1.5fps

I don't know either of these cameras but my previous experience of consumer digicams for action photography wasn't good. I'm into mountain biking and found the "shutter" lag (for want of a better word) after pressing the button was so great that the rider was generally out of the frame when the pic was taken.

Tried my mates Canon (EOS 300D?) and this was a different kettle of fish.  Bearing in mind you motorsport interest I think it is worth checking out this aspect of both cameras.

I appreciate your comments but budget has to be a consideration and wanted BIG zoom for reaching far bits of Anglesey circuit etc. By your comment the Fuji continuous rate would be better then? what about difference in shutter speed for the 2 models?
