I don't think that formatting alone will necessarily destroy any old existing data that was there before formatting.

To all intents and purposes, a hard disk format will remove any data from the disk.

Ok, if someone really wanted to (and not too much had been written to the disk after formatting) they could get data from it. However, a 'standard' OS like XP won't see things on the disk. To the OS it'll look completely empty.

Depends on what it detected.

Some things detected as spyware are just tracking cookies and the like. You've only got to visit one website to pick up a few of them...

Certainly not from the avatars service (although the 'management' interface does use cookies, serving of avatars themselves doesn't).

However, I might put in some monitoring soon to try to track down the numerous people trying to use the avatar service to post images to other forums... :angry:

Yep, you have.

Of course, they get blocked, so they don't get what they think they're getting (probably just a nice piece of paper with a red 'X' in it...)

I doubt it, they'd probably apply online for a bigger overdraft/loan before nicking the lot  :D
