Indian Ocean Earthquake.

I would have thought a wave that size is bound to affect the UK too.   I saw a documentary a while back about it, you should see the size of the cracks in the hillside already.   Apparently it's the fact that the mountain is full of water - which will turn to steam if the volcanoe blows it's top - that'll cause the landslip.

Let's face it, when it comes to man v nature, we've no chance.

Let's just hope it doesn't happen.

I'd like to think, in vain I'm sure, that the sheer magnitude of the tsunami will make the al q'aida (sp), and those of a similar mind, realise that they are simply too puny for words. In the mass destruction stakes, Allah (or whoever you see fit to invoke) has all the aces. Hopefully they'll leave wrecking the world up to Him from now on. ???

I'm sure the wave will affect the UK, but I don't think the effects will be damaging to the UK coastline or infrastructure. I like to think that if there were going to be significant effects, they would have said. The aftermath will be a different thing though.

The La Palma event is going to happen, and people have been working on scenarios for some time. I'm sure if the UK was going to be affected, word would be out there by now. As I mentioned earlier, I've heard locals in the Canaries talking about the La Palma event for nearly two years. It's pretty common knowledge out there amongst the population...

Maybe I'll do some more digging. I wonder what the UK version of the USGS is called?

I wonder what the UK version of the USGS is called?

It's called the British Geological Survey...

I suppose with the economy in meltdown, a little flooding on the west coast will hardly figure.

Indeed.

The BBC web site that contains a little detail about the programmes I saw last night is here. Last two paragraphs of text...

More worrying is my amateur interpretation of the programme...

Seems like some parts of the UK coasts could well be at risk here

Have you read Bill Bryson's "A short history of nearly everything"?  There are a really interesting couple of chapters on earthquakes and volcanoes and stuff, particularly fascinating (and scary) to read about Tokyo and Yellowstone National Park.  Apparently a bloke from the USGS studying the volcanic nature of Yellowstone in the 1960s was puzzled that he couldn't find the caldera, which is the pit thingy where non-mountain type volcanoes explode from.  It wasn't until NASA took some photos from space that he realised why: the whole 9000 square km park was the caldera   :0  :0  :0

And the actual report by Dr Day (the scientist who featured in the show) can be found here.

It's a bit (well a lot) of a dry read, but it's interesting. Check out the wave spread pictures...

650 metres! Jesus H, that's over 2000 feet! I'm no surfer but that would be a roller. :p

Actually, no.

The wave would probably not break. It is a common misunderstanding to thing of these waves as scaled up versions of the waves we see at the north shore of hawaii. The La Palma wave will be a directed wave. it will not be circular like the indonesian one. The wave distribution will be triangular which causes the waveheight to decrease more slowly. The amount of momentum hitting the US east coast will be enormous, the wave will penetrate 20km inland. There is a chance that if the island collapses slowly the wavelength will be so long that the momentum only causes the waterlevel to rise. Like eb and flood but then a bit bigger.

It will be a tragedy but still I'd like to see it happen

About the article, I have some comments but I will not bore you with them.  Well ok just one then: they use shallow water equations to describe the tsunami over the ocean :'nuff said

Aparently there are still almost 4000 britons unaccounted for according to the police.

Death toll could be closer to 600.

Anyone see the 1 hour programme last night on ITV?

More unseen footage and interviews with survivors and UK helpers. After 10mins my wife had to leave the room as it was too upsetting, i must admit, i too was shocked.

The death toll rises daily, friends of my parents have not been in touch.

So many people are effected.....Even Richard Attenborough has a loss !!!  CLICK HERE
