Man On The Clapham Omnibus Posted December 31, 2004 Posted December 31, 2004 I concur with all the views on the disaster, it's indescribable and some of the first hand accounts, especially one on R4 this morning, moved me greatly. But, what really moved me to throw something at the television was Colin Powell saying how the US would make a donation and that he wanted to show "the Muslim World" that the US is "there to help in a crisis". Maybe I'm being too sensitive and over-critical, but should he really be making political capital out of this? Especially as a very significant fraction of the countries' populations that were hit are not wholly Muslim, Sri Lanka and India for example. Quote
James Posted December 31, 2004 Posted December 31, 2004 Goverment sending £15,000,000.....How many cruise missiles 2? I wonder how everyone would feel about donating the money raised from the charity blat to this worthy cause? Quote

Would be nice but probably not going to happen I believe the Premier League are donating 1 million pounds, according to reports I've heard. Correct, each club is donating £50,000. At Northampton Saints today there were two collections, I don't yet know how the Save The Children fund got on, but the Club collection amongst the fans (todays attendance 12,001) totalled £14,000 at full time, and the collection was due to continue into the evening. All of the players are donating their wages from the next home game (Glasgow on Friday Jan 14th). Well done guys. Quote
wezzy_jess Posted January 1, 2005 Posted January 1, 2005 I have a friend who was working at a Dive Centre in Koh Lanta at the time of the earth quake. Fortunately he survived. He lost a number of friends as a result of the tidal wave. I have been in contact with him since and the effect it has had on him is obvious. He is staying on there to help with the aftermath. He took some photo's immediately after the water subsided, this is the what he saw. http://www.atmospheres.tv/tsunami.htm Quote

jak Posted January 3, 2005 Posted January 3, 2005 Somethings bothering me about this.....Aid not getting through but numerous reporters, camera crew etc all over the place.Saw a woman this morning with two broken legs screaming in agony(on the news). No painkillers available I was talking about this the other day. Instead of ferrying loads of news reporters and crews around, would n't it be better to use the transport to take aid to those who need it? John. Quote
Blatman Posted January 3, 2005 Posted January 3, 2005 And just how much aid can you get into a plane seat? The reporters and their equipment are going via scheduled flights which are not geared up to take food or chemical aid. A good deal of the kit they take with them is taken as hand luggage, so there is very litle cargo space taken up by the reporters and their gear. Trust me on this... Quote
