Nick.Petty
Having just purchased my new Dell Dimension 8300 and NTL Broadband to keep up with the Joneses (you lot) .. I find that I am besieged with Popups saying that my "computer is not secure etc etc wide open to hackers etc etc try our new gimp mask lingerie etc etc ...." Have Norton antivirus plus Pop Up Ad Filter and Free Surfer MkII installed, all of which I have been told by an old IT mate of mine will cure the problem, but no - the popups are coming in thick and fast. Any ideas fellas ? Cheers, Nick

BobM
Try Ad-aware, works pretty well. One of the things it does is stick a big 'hosts' file in yor Windows/System directory which stops your computer looking up most of the common ad sites. Toby Mack
what about win2k. I've just started getting hit by this. Trouble is, the above site (and others) says that win2k uses messageing for things like print spoolers so I am not convinced I want to just turn it off. Comments? 7SE
Maybe a Firewall is what you need, sounds like you are getting unsolicited msgs which is different to pop-ups which are driven from web pages that you are looking at. Norton do one which includes the anti-virus that you have, maybe there is an upgrade path available to you.

Toby Mack
but the free version of zonealarm doesn't appear to touch messenger popups. Or have I got in configured wrong? Do I need to buy the pro version?
Peter Cox
Any help for office 2k. I am beseiged with popups for Russian brides (Tempting); russian boys (not tempting) and penile enlargement(I don't think so mister!! Uncanny, I get very few pop-ups but I get incessant emails about porn sites, penile enlargement, Viagra and generics, loan rates and not to mention Dr. Ogodougoo from Nigeria who wants to put £30M in my bank account for 24hrs (he's a persistent b*******). 90% of my email intake is now spam . I'd move away from Microshaft products but I think it's the webbots who pick my email addresses up. Update: I don't get any spam at the mo' as my 1998 Gateway machine is upkfuced Oh well, thank god it's thursday...Cadwell tomorrow

Pro version on Win2k doesn't stop them either. Good firewall but if all you want is to stop the popups you'll be wasting your cash.
