SootySport Posted July 6, 2021 Posted July 6, 2021 What’s happened to it? I can’t find it anymore. Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted July 6, 2021 Posted July 6, 2021 The old one couldn’t be used any more. (I forget the technical reason, but it not being compatible with the later versions of the forum software rings a bell.) Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted July 6, 2021 Posted July 6, 2021 There is a new version, called Community Map, we may have to look into it, I don’t know how it compares, cost wise, to the old one though! Quote
Kingster Posted July 6, 2021 Posted July 6, 2021 As Dave said - new version required following forum update. New version is a paid add-on. So the committee need to decide if it’s something worth paying for (taking into account that only one person has asked about it in the last year 🤔) 1 Quote
John Williams (Panda) - Joint Manchester AO Posted July 6, 2021 Posted July 6, 2021 it would be a nice thing... and i would use it 1 Quote
Richard (OldStager) Posted July 6, 2021 Posted July 6, 2021 Well I would add myself, where it could prove useful is for when we are traveling around the country and you may have an issue with your car, it would be good to perhaps message the nearest member to see if they could offer any assistance or whatever, rather than calling up your breakdown company. Would a small subscription per member who wished to add themselves be viable, in that it would only be visible to those who has paid into it?. Quote

OK thank you, shame we don't have any coders on here, ( or perhaps we do) I once did a similar map for a dog forum decades ago, as it happened we had a particularly gifted member who was able to build this and integrate it into the software. The problem is, the forum must ever move forward, if for no other reason, the security patches; over time, and major version changes in the software, this has proven to have an annoying habit of breaking the old code. 1 Quote

Yes I know that feeling, we had a new version installed then half a dozen other thing that once worked no longer do, we had many sleepless nights trying to fix stuff. Then it started all over again next update, one reason I got out of messing with the backend of forums. Quote
djm Posted July 6, 2021 Posted July 6, 2021 If I could jump in with my two penneth I'm not an active member but and haven't been to any meetings as of yet. I am one of the club's very slow builders who uses and benefits from the forum and the other online info. When I joined the club first the Bath & Bristol area was without an AO and has only in the last couple of years started up again thanks to Chris Broster. Because there were no local meets at the time I joined I found it very useful to be able to see what members lived in my local area. I know that it was voluntary to be included on the map but I don't think that the amount quoted is unreasonable for members and the benefits gained and would like to see it return. 1 Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted July 6, 2021 Posted July 6, 2021 Thanks David, it's always great to actually get some unsolicited feedback about things like this; so that we know whether they're actually being used. Quote
djm Posted July 6, 2021 Posted July 6, 2021 Cheers Dave, also correct me if I am wrong, because of this data protection malarky you are not allowed to let a member know if your next door neighbour is a member! But if we had the "voluntary" members map with a reasonable amount of cooperation it would be very useful! Quote
