Excess of moderation in the forum?

Just a further point, members can and often do directly hide their own posts for various reasons.  So don’t assume just because a post has gone it’s been moderated.

I don’t think it’s still the case*, but with some even quite recent versions of the forum software, if the person that started a thread hid their own, first post, it automatically hid the whole thread, dragging all replies along with it. (Obviously, not ideal.)

(*As in, I just briefly, tried it and couldn’t do it without cheating and using admin rights).

We do sometimes get those who post up a piece of information or something intended to perhaps just be a short concise post, get in touch if the thread has gone completely astray, in their eyes, and are asked to hide/remove it. We will review any request like that on its individual circumstances, but will usually try and look favourably on the request. Provided it’s legitimate. (This is 95% Stuff and Nonsense with a small proportion of Start Line threads.)

Outside of that, there are some forum areas, like Tech Talk, The FAQ and the sales sections where things are a little different, but this is stated in the forum sub sections description, (or should be! ) These areas, may, at the moderation/admin teams discretion be edited to keep subjects relevant and broadly on topic. It is true that sometimes if a not directly relevant, but useful/important drift occurs, it may well be allowed to continue, until either it’s run out of steam, but is considered to beneficial to move, and split off, or, it gets its own real momentum going and is split off into its own active thread.

This last bit is where it’s tricky knowing how long to let it ride; split off a beneficial drift too early, and it kills the debate stone dead, loosing the benefit of everyone’s experience, to late, and momentum is lost from the original thread, stalling that one, instead.

Sales is slightly different. We don’t have a “no post bumping” policy, unlike some forums, we try to just use common sense. If someone wants to bump their own advert every few weeks or months, whereas if someone decides to virtually spam themselves for a week, you know who I’m looking at here, Blatters(!) we will nicely, ask them to reign it back a notch.

By the same token, if a bit of occasional chatter helps keep an advert near the top, most of the team will not worry about it. If however someone starts a major debate on someone else sales thread, or worse still, starts trashing it the team will dive in and start trying to sort things out.

So to sum up, not all things that may look like moderation are! Sometimes it’s just members tidying up after themselves.

The Only thing I’d add - when posts are moderated it would be useful (and polite) to get a PM ago advise what action has been taken and why.

It’s difficult to self moderate if you don’t know a post has been actioned.

Good point Russ,

we do generally, if it's felt the member who's reported needs to be contacted.

For example - Some members kindly report a lot of post in the wrong section. Hence if we agree, we just move them and rightly or wrongly assume that the sender would notice it's been moved.  Same goes for Spam. We check out the IP address, any other post history, discuss across the team to ensure it's agreed it is spam,  and then zap the spammer as quick as possible. Again we'd not generally write a PM to the member who's advised.

I agree it may appear rude, however many of the mods are moderating on top of busy day jobs etc and hence prefer to spend the time fighting spam etc and not sending pleasantries out via PM etc.

If it’s any help, I can be rude for you between 7 AM and 10 PM, allowing breaks for happy hour and trips to the booze fridge and the wine rack. 🍷🥂🍾 🍺

Excess of alcohol in the forum?

If being on committee taught me anything, it’s to drink in moderation.  A lot of moderation.  Also that life is too short to drink cheap wine, lousy beer and vodka that’s available to buy in 2l plastic bottles.

Ah yes the pre AGM "preparation". I seem to recall burgers, booze, bbq's, booze, vandalism, booze, petty theft, booze and then waking up in a field surrounded by empty plastic vodka bottles...
