To the topic title - No, I don't feel the moderation is excessive. Just my opinion and worth as much or as little as any other members.

A lot has been said about it being wrong to use opinions to moderate and rules should be used instead. Rules are just opinions held by a majority, or at least, those in charge. Many people don't like rules when they don't suit either. A rule set to manage a place like this is either going to be extremely simple and ban almost everything or absurdly and unmanageably complex to consider every possible situation.

A personal opinion, some feel an almost pathological need to be right about absolutely everything and have the last word - that's an attitude that really won't like to be 'moderated'. If one feels overly-moderated, try a bit of introspection first perhaps.

And a more general observation, I think everybody is getting a bit stir-crazy frankly. I include myself in that.

That did hurt... a bit... 🤣 when I'm particularly highlighting the fact that much more sensitive topics and stronger and potentially hurting opinions than anything I could possibly say are generally left alone...

Anyway. Spoken loud my opinion. Is not publicly supported by the vast majority therefore leaves me as the moaner (nothing new here really). Let's carry on.

Were you hoping for public support?

I think where we discuss forum rules or etiquette or the behavior of a group or individuals we should do a better job of asking ourselves where we want the discussion to end up, rather than obsess on what started it...

Nope. I was asking if it was that the way to run the place. Publicly it is.

Privately, apparently no, or not for everybody.

Question asked, question answered.

I've taken a look under the hood and here's some facts,

All moderator action this year:

This doesn't include phone calls/chats across the mod team that some topics result in!

Stuff and Nonsense.

It certainly is. A forum for posting exactly what it says. It’s not restricted to Westfields, or even tin tops, but open to wider points of interest. This forum should allow anything that fits the title. As a Liverpool supporter I was saddened to hear of the passing of Ian St John, a football legend. YNWA. Why shouldn’t that be allowed? Posts on covid, brexit and Coronation Street have, in the whole, been engaged in and enjoyed by members.

The problem comes with personalities. It’s very easy to take offence at a written word. And when participants start to say nasty things and use obscene words, then it’s time for moderation. And the pm system should be used responsibly, not as a kangaroo court. If you feel the need for a personal slanging match with a member, then phone or email might be a better option, not this forum, which is read by many as a form of entertainment, especially in these dull times we have to endure at the moment.

And here’s another book to add to Blatman’s suggestion, looks like it might come in useful.

I've been called many many things in the past. Never been called Scott though

And I am sure this is very distressing for Scott. Him being confused with me must hurt

Well that was all very exciting, anyone know where I can get more popcorn?! 😂

Seriously though, this club and forum has been a fantastic oasis of normality, camaraderie, common sense and good humour throughout a really tough 12 months. Elsewhere in the world unfortunately, this often has not been the case.

I personally feel very strongly that the Club Committee, Moderators and AO's have all done us proud in difficult circumstances, keep up the great work! 👏👏

Reading this. It actually seems that I have been unluky. And I sort of understand that the general feeling is different of mine, as I've been involved in 3 of them in the last month or so.

HOWEVER!!!! only one of them was my fault (that goes for the self reflection thing) and I think I'm right to beleave its the first time someone had to moderate one of my messages. But, understand that, if in one way or the other I'm involved or feelt in 3 moderated topics, in a short period of time, I may have the sense that the intervention is beeing much higher than it actually is.

Now, I see Ian's chart, and I can only retract my words, and state that yes, the moderation line is the same as allways, and unfortunately I have been somehow involved in some of them. That taking in account that I'm not a super active member, kind of felt odd. (that is aside of If I think they should or shouldn't have been moderated).

thanks @Ian Kinder (Bagpuss) - Joint Peak District AO for bringing this up and proving me wrong.

I apologise.

I just thought it useful for people to see the stats and form their own opinions. You weren't wrong. Only you know how you feel and there's nothing wrong with asking questions.

Noted but no really needed! This great club belongs to the great members who are part of it, not just the committee or mod team. Yes, a small minority may 'rock the boat' occasionally and it does cause additional work and pain for the team behind the scene etc.

Best wishes, Ian
