scruffythefirst Posted February 2, 2004 Posted February 2, 2004 Just got mine painted up - all i needed to get the remaining output shaft out was a bigger hammer. Theres a lesson here somewhere - start with the bigggest hammer and work up Avtar to change as soon as my sister e-mails me the pic! Scruffy Quote
adhawkins Posted February 2, 2004 Posted February 2, 2004 They're going in the dishwasher just as soon as I get the diff bits out...... The dishwasher? Andy Quote
Blatman Posted February 2, 2004 Posted February 2, 2004 Yup, it's called humour. It's kind of ironic, but if I have to explain it......... Quote
adhawkins Posted February 2, 2004 Posted February 2, 2004 Sorry, sense of humour failure today. Well, it is Monday... Andy Quote
darthurs Posted February 2, 2004 Posted February 2, 2004 I have read your theory about testing the ratio of the diff by turning the input flange and counting how many times you need to turn it for one of the output flanges to make one revolution. I have tried this on my diff (standard) and it only takes 2. Does this sound right? What effect will it have on the car compared to one of the higher ratios? Thanks Dan Quote
Blatman Posted February 2, 2004 Posted February 2, 2004 Try turning it 10 times. A greater range of movement will give you greater accuracy....... Quote
John Loudon - Sponsorship Liaison Posted February 2, 2004 Posted February 2, 2004 ..and don't forget to multiply by 2, so your 2 will be 4 (or most likely 3.9) John Quote
darthurs Posted February 2, 2004 Posted February 2, 2004 Hi John, That sounds better. So is 3.9 good? Dan Quote
Ian Podmore Posted February 2, 2004 Posted February 2, 2004 ..and don't forget to multiply by 2, so your 2 will be 4 (or most likely 3.9) Which is assuming you held one output shaft still whilst the other rotated? Quote
darthurs Posted February 2, 2004 Posted February 2, 2004 Well kind of. One of the drive shafts was still attached so it wouldn't spin round because of the weight. I will try it again when I get home. So it is hold one output shaft still, turn the input shaft. Count the number of times you need to turn it for the free output shaft to rotate once. Then times your result by two? I think it is 3.9 but it could be 4.??. Dan Quote
windy Posted February 2, 2004 Posted February 2, 2004 OK. Got my diff apart.....it's an Escort diff, but the internals will be similar enough.... Got my Escort diff apart too This one was taken in a panic before I had the chance to forget how it went back together. Its a plate diff made by ZF (taken from a capri) & needed a few mods to the standard unit to take bigger halfshafts & more clutch plates to take the power. Similar to the plate diffs fitted to escorts in the same diff that blatters has. Quote
Arm Posted February 2, 2004 Posted February 2, 2004 3rd plate in (from the left) looks a little worn to me ! And it looks like its been fitted the wrong way round ! Quote
Mark Stanton Posted February 2, 2004 Posted February 2, 2004 Betcha have a bit left over when you put it back together Quote
pistonbroke Posted February 2, 2004 Posted February 2, 2004 How does the missus get the sunday dinner ready when your kitchen is in such a mess. Quote
windy Posted February 2, 2004 Posted February 2, 2004 How does the missus get the sunday dinner ready when your kitchen is in such a mess. A bit of axle grease in the sunday roast adds to the flavour! Quote
