You were only supposed to blow the bladdy doors off!

A bit of impromptu ignition map tinkering had a bit of an unforeseen consequence of a big backfire that blew my ITBs off!

Of course it’s all my own fault - well with a little bit of influence from @AdamR 😁

Basically, my ignition map has a few odd looking sites where the advance is just way different to the surrounding sites. I had a conversation with Adam about this a while back and it’s always niggled at me.

But every time I have tried to alter it, the car runs like a bag of hammers - and today was no different. Except that the consequence of the tinkering was to produce a backfire that literally blew the throttle bodies off!

So I managed to bung them back on and limp back home and restore the original map. But it still didn’t run right and my afr was seriously lean at low throttle opening and tickover was just not happening.

I figured the backfire must have knocked the bodies out of balance.

After an hour or more with the vac gauges I just could not get no1 cylinder to show much vacuum at all and they just would not balance.

I discovered that a blanking plug was leaking - bingo! Or so I thought. But no. Still the same. But it did lead me to look at what could possibly cause this.

Turned out that the backfire had actually bent the butterfly on no 1 body!

I managed to straighten it up and the result was much better!

That will do me 😁

So the dodgy looking map is back, the butterflies line up, the TPS is set and the balance is fine. Running sweet!

Back to exactly where it was four hours earlier!

Missed the run out where I was supposed to meet @Nick - Joint North East AO to play with his new TVR though  - weather was lovely too damn it!

Moral of the story. If it ain’t broke...

Nice recovery! :)

But shouldn’t this be in Tech Talk?  This thread should be reported to the Webmaster so he can move it. 😛

You know. I started it in tech talk. But figured it had enough nonsense in it to qualify here instead 🤣

But would you believe - it actually RAN like that!!! Enough to get the car 20 metres to a spot where I could investigate 😳

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; good engine designs just want to run, they’ll try their damndest to actually turn over and run, they may be down on power, running badly or what ever, but it takes something really fundamental, (or catastrophic) to stop them working at all!
