scott beeland
Not really. I've got that info aswell Andy; but I need to know whether that translates into a capable towcar?? Ta anyway
DAVE O
Scott, Our Avensis is rated at 1300kg tow weight. It tows fine on M/ways etc even still pulls in 5th up the hills. It's not the quickest tow car but it does the job. If I had the budget I'd have gone for something with a bigger engine etc..... I would imagine the Zantia will have a far better torque figure so for the money it will probably do the job ok! What about a test tow before you buy? Also has it got air susp?? Dave O. felters
If you're just towing the Westy and it's a two wheel trailer then should be Ok. Tools, spares and stuff are all going to add up though. I've just sold my old tow car for £1,000. 1992 Daihatsu Fourtrak 2.8TD - not very pretty but a great tow car. There are others about... replaced it with a 110 Defender TD5. (Ally body, steel chassis... spot a trend?)
Al Yupright
I have a pug 306 2ltr HDI, with 90bhp and 155lbft and its 'ok' at towing my light Westfield (450kgs) and trailer (500kgs). Its ok at about 60, but if you want to tow at 70 or are going somewhere hilly then it is a pain in the A*** and becomes hard work. Would like to change it for a 130bhp/>200lbft diesel but cant afford it....
John Loudon - Sponsorship Liaison
Scott, Speak to these people. Ask them about their diesel towing upgrades. There is some info on the site. I have one of their smart boxes fitted to my normally 82bhp Astra van. It behaves like a GTi now and the mpg has hardly been affected and has much more power and torque than standard. John BTW - when I only had 82bhp, towing was still OK but now its better than OK
thos
My main car, and tow car, is a Golf TDI 130bhp with 228lb/ft as standard. But with a chip its getting 176bhp and 316lb/ft of torque. The chip is switchable and I've been towing with the chip switched on, but I do worry about my clutch with 316lb/ft going through while dragging the Westfield. I think I'll be dropping her back to standard from now on. It's still pretty nippy when towing, it does like a bit of wheel spin in 2nd, but this is probably down to bad weight distribution with the trailor. Nick Algar - Competition Secretary
Scott, I used to have one of these which I towed a twin axle trailer with, worked quite well, certainly not a bad tow car. Your Minno and "new lightweigh Westie" should be OK. I had my'n from new and about Knackered it after 100K miles. Things to watch for on them are suspension oil pump, dropping rear suspension, dodgy gearbox. Engines is very strong, rest of car OK. When towing car suffer the normal front wheel drive problem of all the weight is at the back and losses traction a bit, but on normal roads should be OK. Blatman
IMO, I'd hang on to see what sort of money Ron is asking for the Audi. It *has* to be a better quality motor than the Xantia...... Which reminds me....the Xantia we had as a fleet car ('bout 5 years ago) had *the* most uncomfortable seats of any car I've ever sat in. When I was looking to upgrade from the 4x4, it was only the thought of the crap seats that had me removing the Xantia from my short list..... peterg
had a Xantia as a company car about 9-10 years ago and have to say that the seats did my back in VW Passat or Audi TDi's would be a better bet
Nick Algar - Competition Secretary
I found seats depended on the model, high spec ones were OK for me.
Blatman
I had a bad back before I had a Xantia. Being handed the keys meant I took Ibuprofen (or Diclofenac, Scott and yes, I know it's slow acting........) before I set off. 30 minutes later, I'd be cursing, regardless of the medication, and I'd be limping for days........ Surgery cured the back, but the Xantia still gave me gip........
