Black friday deals

The bad news in my wife’s  language is that over the Black week i’ve not made any savings.    In my language i’ve not wasted any money on stuff I did not really need while trying to accrue ‘savings’.

Well they look excellent - nice quality. No comparison to the brightness of the old H4 Halogen, plus the dipped beam has a nice sharp (flat) cutoff, so should be MOT safe. They fitted perfectly in the housing - I just need to add a separate sidelight (copying Dave Eastwood's idea of a small, dimmed 10W LED in the triangular mount)

For the sidelights, I bought LED 10W DRL's. They are incredibly bright and need a huge amount of dimming to work as a sidelight. I could probably have used a DRL controller, but I made up a couple of dimmer circuits from spare parts that fit inside the headlight shell - then the sidelights will mount just below.

Here are the circuits - I think a PWM of 20 (out of 255) is good:

and here is the undimmed/ dimmed comparison:

Yep, that's what I found, you're effectively needing to dim a 10W equivalent LED to become a 5W (maximum) equivalent. Though I bought a controller off ebay, (not expensive) as i didn't have the bits lying around

Finished fitting the sidelight, hope they'll be ok for MOT.

Do you need sidelights for mot if you run DRLs?

Posted

Good question, Chris - there doesn't seem to be much good info on MOT sidelight requirements that I can find, apart from needing some... I guess if the DRL were wired to come on as a parking light, that should cover it?

Brightness I believe is the problem if using DRL’s as dual purpose devices. There should be a noticeable difference in levels between the two “modes”.

So if DRLs dim when main and/or sidelights are selected, then they are ok I guess. Currently mine go off when lights are on.

Just thinking ahead to maybe getting some of those lights.

Sorry, you misunderstood me, I was specifically referring to dimming drl’s To use as sidelights.

However, some DRL controllers do indeed dim them down when headlamps are turned on, I suspect it’s possibly a grey area, I’ve not really looked into it. Certainly DRL’s should not be on at the same time as headlamps, to avoid dazzling other motorists at night.

My DRL’s turn off when the headlamps are turned on, courtesy of the built in electronics. I would guess dimming was acceptable, but haven’t checked!

Led DRL on my tin top stay on when lights come on

@Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Secretary I don’t think I misunderstood. I just meant that if I have no sidelights at all due to replacement headlights not incorporating them, then I could use (my existing) DRLs to act as sidelights by dimming them. :t-up:

Yes mine too, but they also dim.

Ah, ok Chris, just wanted to make sure we weren’t at cross purposes! :d

Most aftermarket controllers I’ve seen/tried for DRL’s have a sidelight sense wire that they use to dim down the DRL output.

Just watch out that you don’t have any electronics in the headlamps themselves that could be affected by dimming the DRL feed!
