Thrustyjust Posted September 10, 2017 Posted September 10, 2017 Now, we all know its not the same without Edd. The fat man is also getting fatter, but this little teaser of an Escort Cossie and turbo strip is quite informative , with new guy Ant, so it could be as or even more interesting than Edd on the spanners. Maybe someone listened to what the viewers watched, as the last I saw, was Edd was complaining of his bits being cut out and more 'oldaaaat yaaar aaaand' sales junk by Berty Brewer. So, either way, have a lookie at this and make your mind up Quote
TAFKARM Posted September 11, 2017 Posted September 11, 2017 I like Edd, but to be honest I don't think he's come across very well after exiting the show. Quote
CraigHew Posted September 11, 2017 Posted September 11, 2017 I've seen a couple of Edds on-line "staged" interviews in the last few weeks. There's definately something behind the scenes that's resulted in a massive fall-out between Brewer and Edd, a bit more than the artistic differences being quoted all over the net. I did enjoy watching Ant do the For the love of Cars series with Phil Glenister and can see how he will easily slot into Edd's place, although Glenister should stick to acting IMHO. Time will tell, WD is a tried and tested format despite most people being aware of its shortcomings. I personally prefer the UK based episodes rather than the USA ones. 1 Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted September 11, 2017 Posted September 11, 2017 Agreed, I've really enjoyed all of Ant's series I've seen so far, the recent most expensive cars series, where they gave him his head, as sole presence Terry` was really interesting, and he effortlessly stepped up a gear as the anchor man. I do wonder whether, as much as I like Ed, that he's perhaps had his nose put out slightly by just how good his replacement is! In particular, Ant's interviewing and presenting style when acting as a host for other people, seems so much more natural and has that on-screen charisma that lifts those around him. Whereas Ed, though excellent when doing the solo technical and spannering work on camera, has in his recent solo stuff, without Ed, come across as oddly stilted and a wee bit wooden at times when he's been trying to do interviews and present other people. I did the recent Project Binky interview was hilarious; while there was a certain amount of playing up for the camera, some of the unguarded looks the guys had and were exchanging when Ed wasn't looking at them were priceless and hardly matched the "all mates fooling around" skit that was supposed to be the style. Still, I hope both do well, what a fantastic opportunity to have one favourite car show refreshed and hopefully get another from Ed. Quote
Captain Colonial Posted September 11, 2017 Posted September 11, 2017 It's a difficult one until we see the actual show. I too dislike watching Brewer and can watch an episode now in about 20 minutes by fast forwarding through any Brewer bits, especially the hunt for the car (which he has a team of people doing behind the scenes), doing the deal and selling the car - I usually do this with the subtitles on and fast forwarded so I know the numbers. It was really watching the oily bits and getting some satisfaction when my own fault diagnosis was correct. At least in the last series they started telling us how many man hours were involved. The painfully scripted stuff, all of it with Brewer, is what really irritates me. He turns up with a car Edd has never seen and is surprised about. He shows up in the workshop halfway through and is surprised st how far Edd has or hadn't got. He turns up at the end and is amazed how well the car has turned out. Yeah, right. Any car they get has all the parts and bits needed to fix it and a plan in place before they roll the cameras, let alone before it turns up at the workshop. They have to have it all in place first because of the cost of having a TV crew on standby would be ridiculous. The show would be so much honest and better if they just said, "In the episode, we decided to turn around this car. We bought it, we know what needs sorting, and we have all the bits to sort it out - let's see what happens." TV shows that insult my intelligence are one of my Room 101 choices, which another reason I went off the old Top Gear. When a show resorts to stunts and incidents that are so ludicrous that they could never happen by accident, yet try to make you think they were because it's "funny", I switch off. This was especially true on the one where they raced cross country to see who would give a speech at a black tie dinner, Jeremy's car magically broke in half but still ran, and all the dinner guests sat emotionless when they all turned up covered in muck - sure. Looking forward to giving it a try, but the fast forward, mute and subtitle buttons will be at hand. 1 Quote
CraigHew Posted November 5, 2017 Posted November 5, 2017 Just watched the first episode (S14E01) where they've "done" an Escort RS Cosworth. FIrst impressions extremely good. I admit to already being an Ant Anstead fan anyway but he comes across to camera really well. Brewer hasn't changed his delivery much if at all although this first show certainly wasn't as cheesy as some of the latter Brewer/China ones. The car itself needed minimal work really (turbo rebuild, sump gasget and new cat) but the mechanical segments were very descriptive and well filmed. Very nice touch getting one of the original designers involved and suggesting the 3rd rear wing. Best line for me was from Ant "I just love the smell of clutch"..... As far as I'm concerned the new partnership takes nothing at all away from the programme. Edd who? Quote
Captain Colonial Posted November 6, 2017 Posted November 6, 2017 Oi, spoiler alert please! Some of us can’t see the first three episodes until the middle of December! The next two after that are a 1982 Toyota Supra and a 1973 Ford Mustang Mach 1, which will no doubt horrify a few purists in here. However, I owned a red Mach 1 with a 351 Windsor V8 so I’m looking forward to that one. It was like driving an aircraft carrier, the bonnet was that long. Quote
CosKev Posted November 6, 2017 Posted November 6, 2017 @CraigHew where have you managed to watch the first of the new series? Quote
CraigHew Posted November 6, 2017 Posted November 6, 2017 @CosKev, watched the first 3, Celica supra and mustang episodes 2 and 3. Do you want me to put the episodes into my Dropbox folder and give you access? 1 Quote

Buzz Billsberry Posted November 7, 2017 Posted November 7, 2017 Well it just show how much I've been out of touch I didn't even realise a new series had even started....I'd heard a bit of chit chat! I guess i can catch up on sky, well Discovery? if you see what I mean> Buzz Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted November 7, 2017 Posted November 7, 2017 It hasn’t started yet in this country. But is about three weeks in on Velocity in the US. I’m presuming from talk of sharing it via Dropbox, this is a recording of the US broadcasts. Quote
Deanspoors Posted November 8, 2017 Posted November 8, 2017 That third wing though .. actually enjoyed the change with Ant presenting instead, although nobody in their right mind would have thought another wing would have been a good idea surely?! Quote
Adamg1987 Posted November 10, 2017 Posted November 10, 2017 Just watched the clip posted above, seems a refreshing change. When I heard Edd was leaving I thought the show would be ruined but judging of that clip it seems ok. Quote
