As in the title. What do people think? I wasn't overly keen due to temperatures still in double figures, but Mrs D won this round! The heating's not on yet though, so I can claim a small, but significant victory...

Gave in this afternoon and put the central on for two hours to take the chill off the house, it was really uncomfortably chilly inside.  Wore a heavy sweater yesterday!

Wood burner has been on for a week or so...

I normally ban central heating in our house until October but as I'm away the Mrs has taken advantage and it's been on everyday this week.

Don't really understand this business of turning the heating on/off, I leave mine set to 21 degrees (it's been that way for for nearly 10 years) and it just does it's own thing all year, I don't even think about turning it on/off.

The only time I change the temperature setting is if I go on holiday, it gets set to 12 degrees to ensure the house doesn't get cool enough to cause a damp problem.

Maybe it's all about the principle??? But in my mind I don't care if it's June or December, if it's cold it's cold.

What I do know is that a lot of people have boiler issues at this time of year, basically because the thing hasn't run for several months. So any savings made are surely offset by the repair bills? Where my boiler is 12 years old and aside from changing the temp sensors on the outside, it's never had to be repaired.

Also my Mrs is pretty good with the thermostat concept, where a lot of people just don't understand how to work them (or rather cannot leave them alone).

I don't have much choice; I don't have sepperate hot water/central heating systems. If I want hot water, the boiler has to run on it's time clock. If I wanted the CH to not run at all, I'd have to de-program the CH time clock and reprogram again come winter. Not worth the hassle, as the boiler is still running anyway for hot water. I just run the master thermostat at a summer setting and a winter setting. That way the heating only comes on if it's a particularly cold day, which it needs to do, as despite being a late eighties built property, with insulation, double glazing etc, it starts to feel cold/damp relatively quickly.

I just couldn't let the place get as cold as the semi I grew up in when I was little used to be without massive damp problems. (Cue fond memories, of drawing in the ice on the inside of bedroom windows, when I was four or five :d )

Normally I'd stick to the "October is time for heating" rule, but yesterday early evening it got quite chilly here in sunny Staffordshire, so I turned it on.

Yep! The only concession I will make to not doing that is to set the timer to 'ONCE' in winter and 'TWICE' in spring summer and autumn so that the boiler doesn't cycle all day. My system is wired wrongly because at one time there was an outside pool and a spare boiler to heat it. My basement plumbing - much of it redundant due to removal of the pool twenty years ago - looks more like an industrial installation than a house and the wiring is ridiculously complex and wrong. But, yes, thermostat set to nineteen or twenty-ish and left like it.
