Moving a SORNd car

Thanks All, If only it were that simple, the drives are at different levels and the back of their garage is on the edge of our front garden with the drives at different levels with several feet in difference,

From what I can determine we have a number of choices,

Just move it and hope for the best (from a responsible parent perspective I can't really recommend this one can I)

Push it, I don't think this is any more legal than the first choice as it would still be on the road and would actually take longer.

Put it on a trailer - a lot of work and not particularly straight forward

Use trade plates and make sure that the driver is covered with their trade insurance

leave it where it is and make him wait until I've finished.

When it was purchased one of his colleagues drove it back on trade plates using their insurance so I think this is the best legal option, it's just a matter of getting it sorted out.

thank you

Out of interest Rhett, how are you expecting to get caught and what do you think the chances are..?

(edited to add I would obviously not condone moving it without trade plates)

Be careful with trade plates.  They are designed for car dealers/workshops etc who have vehicles in their temporary possession for either resale or repair.  The quote below is from the DVLA website:

"A motor trader: may use the trade licence on mechanically propelled vehicles only if they are temporarily in their possession in the course of their business".

None of this will apply if you use someone else's trade plates just to move the car.

Cover it with a gazebo and inch it there in the dead of night :)

Hire 4 "wheel dollys" and push it there.  So long as the MX5 doesn't touch the road......

or

Get you socket set out and move it bit by bit....

I won't be doing anything but I don't want my son to get caught either, I just want to do all I can to eliminate Sods Law understand what can and can't be done so that he knows the risks. I know the change of getting caught driving 20 meters is incredibility small and there a huge number of people regularly driving without insurance, tax, licenses etc every day.

We all know that Sods Law says that just as he pulls out the drive a police car with come passed equipped with ANPR and pick it up. I guess I am being a bit paranoid but that goes with the parent hood territory I guess. Plus I know if he does get into problems i'll end up being involved with picking up the expensive pieces.

Do you by any chance work for the Government and enjoy working yourself up worrying about red tape???

Just push the bl**** car next door, unless of course your road is permanently craving with police cars and VOSA inspection officers.

Otherwise I am sure a few '7' owners could push it for you whilst you were not looking.....

Take the reg. plates off. That'll fool any ANPR camera.

Once upon a time you could tow an unlicensed vehicle, is that not the case nowadays?

If your really concerned - get a pair of these https://www.machinemart.co.uk/p/awd1-automotive-wheel-dolly-pair/

Stick them under the rear wheels and then push the vehicle next door (I believe as long as two wheel or off the ground that's ok - so you could tow it 100 miles on a proper two wheel dolly trailer if you wanted to)

Or even get two sets so your parents can move it around once the tyres have gone flat and your son is no longer "bovvered" (been there, done that :( )
