SootySport Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 Is there a telephone number I can ring that could check what I can get? You've already been told according to your earlier post and it will only be a guide to what speed you'll get. If you want to do it again Log on to your bt.com account and somewhere on the website you'll see how to get a projected speed. By phone try the old 150, it still works and go for the sales team on broadband side. Quote
dhutch Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 If you have a fibre optic [FTTC] box 600m away then you have just 600m of copper. Distance from the exchange makes little to no difference if the link from the streetbox to the exchange is fibre. I think we need a bit more info. This is only the is you have a FTTC (fibre to the cabinet) VDSL internet service such as "BT Infinity" , if you are on an ADSL based package then as far as I am aware you will still be using the copper/ali lines right back to the exchange. If you have VDSL the length inside the house obviously becomes more critical as its a larger percentage of the copper (which is only going to the FTTC cabinet, not right back to the exchange) which is why you get a new "Mk3" master socket which includes a build in whole-house filter and means you can only plug the modem/hub into the master socket. You can also achieve this by removing the front of a NTE5 master socket, plugging a filter into the 'test socket' behind, and pluging the front plate and modem/hub directly into this, this should largely isolate poor house wiring if present. If you put your number into the BT checker (link below) it will tell you what you can get, as well as the speeds you should see and the cabinet number you are service by (assuming your not exchange-only) which should allow you to confirm if the green box you are looking at is indeed your cabinet/pcp. https://www.dslchecker.bt.com Daniel Quote
Terry Everall Posted November 10, 2015 Author Posted November 10, 2015 It says not a BT line or a new number! I am not a BT customer ( Talk Talk) but why does it not recognise it? Quote
John Loudon - Sponsorship Liaison Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 I would have thought you would have been a plusnet man Terry? Quote
Geoffrey Carter (Buttercup) Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 I am with talk talk at my home and plus net at my work home and the plus net is a lot better in every way including customer service. Just in the process of leaving talk talk for plusnet at home. Quote
Kevin Jones Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 Not sure you have a fiber option, if you stick your details into https://www.samknows.com/broadband/broadband_checker and it will show what you can get. Quick summary is no fiber/FTTC, 2.36km from exchange(straight line), likely should not be able to even get 2Mbps ADSL (obviously a bit conservative). However openreach site says they are taking orders for fiber on the Dringhouses exchanges, not sure I would trust that at all but worth checking with the ISPs that serve the exchange, BT, TalkTalk & Sky to see what they say, maybe samknows is just out of date. SootySport Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 It says not a BT line or a new number! I am not a BT customer ( Talk Talk) but why does it not recognise Sorry I assumed you are with BT. As you are with TalkTalk then you need to speak with them about cost and speeds. Quote
corsechris Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 I just spotted that so far the only test has been download/upload speeds. What link speeds are you seeing? Could easily be down to other issues than the basics, could well be a busy node on the exchange or just throttling by the ISP. Quote
Blatman Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 My postcode is YO23 2UF and a possible speed search shows 38Mbps or 76 Mbps is available but everyone on my lane only has 3Mbps speed. How would I go about looking at what is really available? BT Checker says BT Infinity is available at some addresses in your postcode. Go to this website http://www.productsandservices.bt.com/products/speed-checker click I don't know my landline number and put your post code in. Choose your address from the list and click check now. FILFAN Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 Terry. My mums with talk talk and got a random call today apparently of them but obviously not. Asking her to log on to her pc in order to improve her connection speed. By some mirical she didn't fall for it. But thought I best look out for our senior members and give you the heads up. Joking aside though that is completely true and guess she's had her details stolen in the recent hack. Quote
