Julie Hall - WSCC AO Representative Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 I am an industrial chemist, turned sales executive when I realised where the money was, but since my husband retired I now flounce about in our office being massively overqualified for the job, pretending to work, one day a week. The hubby, he was managing director of a painting and decorating company before he retired, total number of employees 1, himself. 1 Quote
Yanto Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 Spent 26 years in the RAF specialising in air movements and supply/logistics. Now run my own self-build housing consultancy (think Grand Designs) and run courses on self building and project management in Swindon along with being resident 'Expert' for Build It magazine writing articles and giving advice at self build shows. Wish i'd known about you a few years ago when i built my house, could have potentially saved time/money/grief....! Quote

Darrell O'Neill Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 Nothing sexy or exciting.... I'm a self employed sparky.. I did manage to build two houses from scratch doing 99% of the work myself and had 5 employees before I was 30. These days i work alone, some days my finances can look good, other days I can be strangling customers for payment. I can work 80+ hours a week, get called out at 5am or 9pm whilst sat in a restaurant with my mrs or at Legoland with the kids, I've cleared the mortgage yet will still probably end up working til I'm 60-70...BUT, some days, if the weather is right, I can say '**** it' and take the day off to blat in the Westie without having to ask anyone's permission, I guess life isn't all that bad. benedwards64 Posted May 10, 2015 Posted May 10, 2015 I'm an ITAM consultant, delivering license compliance, managed services and best practice reviews for companies' IT departments for the mainstream software vendors. It's a surprisingly varied job, and I get to travel around the country visiting anything from 20 user SMBs to large enterprise companies. I also get to travel abroad occasionally, which is nice, but not too often that it becomes chore Quote
Mooch Posted May 10, 2015 Posted May 10, 2015 Wish i'd known about you a few years ago when i built my house, could have potentially saved time/money/grief....! The most I can claim to have saved someone was £18,000. He was being charged VAT on labour by his builder when there was no requirement. He was a happy bunny! Quote

Amen to that. The beauty of working for yourself from home. That's why I was able to build my Westy in just 9 months. I was 'working' but with a smartphone by your side no one knows if you are slaving away in the office or up you your neck in grease and rivets in the garage! Not having to take holidays for track days is a nice freedom to have... Quote
Kyle Posted May 10, 2015 Posted May 10, 2015 Thermal Insulation Engineer and sheet metal worker. Hairy-arsed lagger to you and I. I work everywhere from all those boring nuclear and coal-fired power stations, oil refineries and chemical works to food factories and car production plants. I hate it but the money is so good I've been almost stuck. Currently studying a BSc in Forensic Psychology. 1 Quote

Monitorlizard Posted May 10, 2015 Posted May 10, 2015 Been retired now for 4 1/2 years, prior to that I had worked for nigh on 30 years in the offshore drilling industry, after leaving the RAF.Started at the bottom, progressed to crane operator,Deck Supervisor & Safety Training Coordinator.Had 3 1/2 years working in Trinidad, after 20 odd years in the North Sea,then finished off working offshore Egypt.Did a hasty retreat from Egypt, when the Arab Spring kick off.Turned quite nasty, locals decided that we were not wanted any more. When that happened the drilling company pulled the plug,so they all lost their jobs.Very short sighted people. Now catching up for all the time spent away from home. Doug Dastardly Posted May 10, 2015 Posted May 10, 2015 Cooper no not mini or tommy but make repair whisky barrels Is that at Craigellachie? I visited there a few years ago, it looked like hard work. Everyone had arms like popeye, après spinach. Underwater photographer. Fish, wrecks, scantily-clad female models... R Sounds awful, can't you talk it up a bit? Maybe some photos to prove it's better than it sounds. Of fish, naturally. Quote
corsechris Posted May 10, 2015 Posted May 10, 2015 Job title says Broadcast Engineer which I used to find interesting from time to time but reality these days is very little engineering, more keyboard rattling than anything else now, sadly. Will be semi-retired this time next year so more time to mess with cars. Quote
