TableLeg
Thanks John for the reply Can you offer any slight alternative with the following consideration? Where ever the back up storage is I would really rather it not be full access to all devices so perhaps a NAS may not be the best option. The last thing I'd want is my kids messing it up! How about if I had a 1TB WD Red HDD drive in a USB enclsoure, a DVD RW drive and a sizeable USB memory stick. Then I could save the files on my internal drive, use FileSync to make a copy on the 1Tb drive and the USB memory stick, and then manually backup to DVD like you suggested? What do you think? John K
"The last thing I'd want is my kids messing it up!" Totally understandable, you dont want them finding your ahem, B&W French Art movies lol... Its really easy to set up ACLs (Access Control Lists) on a NAS to keep stuff secure. But if you prefer a ext USB drive, no worries. But then you can flop back to a WD Green, they are more eco an will run cooler in a caddy. The Reds are a half way between donestic and enterprise and are intended to spin most of the time. The greens will be happier spinning up and down. Will you still use the desktop or laptop internal HDD as the primary storage? If so replace the NAS with that. I dont store anything on the internal HDD except the OS, everything is on the NAS. Thats why I then double up on that. If you will use the ext drive for WIP (Work In Progress) consider eSATA or USB3, or you will die of boredom waiting for file access. Call me if you want to discuss, but not tonight as I'm alreafy clattered..!
TableLeg
Thanks again John, Yes exactly, my plan is to use the internal drive as the main drive (this is a 2nd internal drive and not the main OS drive), backing that up to the other medias. My desktop doesn't have USB3 so I'll have to stick with what I have. Thanks again you have been extremely helpful both on here and on the phone. Appreciate that.
