s2rrr
I have to say I've seen it done. Once the axle is stripped down its a bit too late to try wheeling the car outside the door to get clearance. Standard garage width doesn't allow both sides to be done but I guess with a trolley jack or better still skids it can be manoeuvred about. Also don't forget the need for a press to push the bearings off to change the seals Its the sort of dangler up you only make once. Bit like sawing the branch whilst being sat on it. SootySport
At least you have all winter to do this Mr Q. Step by step we'll get you through this saga. You can't buy new half shafts, they finished manufacturing a long time ago, only re-furbed ones that you buy now and all that is, is new seals and bearings. You may be able to find a machine shop locally to take of those extra welded sleeves and then just buy new seals. Knowing your track record you'll end up buying similar half shafts that don't fit for another reason.

Quinten
Cheers guys, this will be indeed a job for inside the garage, but that means I can only do one side at a time (which should not pose a problem right?). So if I understand it correctly, there's going to be 4 bolts holding in the half shaft, and then it is just a pull out job? And fitting is reverse? No special tools? Do these half shafts need to be greased up? When I pull them out, there's not going to be any diff oil coming out right (sorry for asking stupid questions). tisme
Quinten, You're looking a quite a lot of money for new shafts as they look like they're primarily made for motorsport Escorts and rallying type abuse. It's probably going to be difficult to find an Escort back axle at a breakers now (though I suspect there are still a few rotting away somewhere). I'd have a think about getting the offending "centre" machined down to the standard Ford size and also then look at the oil seal "bearing" to see if that can also be reduced or increased with a sleeve to accommodate a modern seal - these quys have a good selection for example http://simplybearings.co.uk/shop/Seals/c19/index.html or http://www.bearingstation.co.uk/products/Oil_Seals I would have thought getting it machined will be less than a set of rally spec half shafts - one last thought - how about good old Rally Design http://www.rallydesign.co.uk/index.php?cPath=2585 lots of options but you'd need to do some close measuring and confirmations to make sure you don't end up with the same thing.
