Mark (smokey mow)
That's not standard either. I agree, this is what my old live axle looked like
Quinten
Hmm, it is almost like I've got that additional sleeve stuck on? Now I'm definitely thinking that I should be able to trim it down a bit?
SootySport
It does look like an extra sleeve welded on the original Ford hub, you can see the welding line. Original hubs are one piece and machined to shape. I guess a previous owner wanted to use a certain type of wheel. I would go and find another original pair of hubs and changed them over, must be a fellow member with a couple going cheap.
Quinten
But what is an original pair of hubs? Remember how I struggled to get myself the right brake drums? Actually, how do you remove the hub? Looking at it from the front there doesn't seem to be anything to 'undo' ?
SteveD
they are half shafts you need not hubs , have a look on ebay for escort half shafts

Quinten
they are half shafts you need not hubs , have a look on ebay for escort half shafts Like these from Retro ford? http://www.retro-ford.co.uk/shop/content/escort-mk12-two-piece-halfshafts-kit-drt017 (ignoring hopefully the price ). That may actually kill another bird, as when I removed my brake drum again (to have a good look) I noticed a lot of grease around the hub/axle (sorry, do not know the name for it), which looks like it is leaking? SteveD
you have to remove it all to replace the halfshafts anyway ,so while your at it fit new seals ,there pence and you can get shafts for 60 squid
Quinten
Steve, it sounds so easy when you say it Can the axle itself remain in situ while it is all being replaced? Would it be to much to ask for a 'shopping list' with a view of getting it all to a known standard?
SteveD
yes axle stays in place , really easy job wuv , get a escort manual or look on the interweb at escort halfshaft swap ,you tube is your freind , a couple of bolts and yank em out halshaftsbearingssealsoil ,drop it and refill
Quinten
Escort manual! I'd almost forgotten I got one of those given when I got the car from the previous owner... I bet it will be just as easy as the sump plug on my Vectra which defeated me today (another sob story) Seriously though, it does seem to be relatively straightforward, but I may take my old ones out first to absolutely make 110% sure what length/spline I need. I've seen a pair on Ebay, but they are obviously in need of a refurb. Would you say it is better to buy new (> £400) or used and refurb (£60 + refurb, whatever that may be)? SteveD
nothing to refurb really just new bearings and seals and make sure they go back in the same side they were removed from if you buy secondhand ,make sure they are marked o/s n n/s
Quinten
Then it sounds easy enough... Good tip on the OS/NS, they look very symmetrical, obviously they are not?
