Quinten Posted March 30, 2015 Author Posted March 30, 2015 I think the silencer should be slightly further back, then mounted level with side of tub, then the link pipe made to match them up. Looking at it I think you've tried to line up the silencer with the manifold, rather than position the silencer better and then get link pipe to match. You are correct about MOT, there is something regarding how far out an exhaust can be, but I don't think yours is that far tbh. Well, I tried to line the silencer up with the bodywork, but due to the bracket, it would leave a huge gap. Nothing like the gap kingster shows in his picture. Here's mine if that helps? Yes, that's a much neater fit. I did (eventually) find a place selling a 'universal' mounting bracket (perforated steel strip essentially, just got to bend it to suit). At £1.95 it's worth a try Quote
tisme Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 Q I ended up making a new strap from stainless (from eBay - 30mmx3mmx1metre) - very strong stuff but was reasonably easy to bend to the circular shape of the silencer (7inch on mine) - needed a very sharp drill to drill the mounting holes though Makes it so much more solid now as I can fit two bobbins (vertical and horizontal) Quote
Quinten Posted March 30, 2015 Author Posted March 30, 2015 Looks good Colin, much better than the strap I bought this morning and have thrown in the bin again this afternoon. It was horrible to bend and looked very blue peter. So back to plan A and re-drill the bracket And now aligned the silencer parallel to the body And re-did the cardboard template The silencer body looks to sit within the confines of the wheel arch 'line', and if I'm honest, I think this looks better than what I had yesterday 1 Quote
TAFKARM Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 Looks much better. How much are they charging you for another link pipe? Quote
CosKev Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 Looks better for sure, but still quite away out from body. Personally I would cut that angled piece of bracket, cut bracket down, and redrill as close to silencer as possible. It will alse reduce the angle on the link pipe if you get silencer closer to body Quote
Kingster Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 My bracket on the can looks the same - but mounts more underneath the can to an angled bracket that is on the bobbin. This brings the can in a lot more as a bonus. Quote
CosKev Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 Excellent pics, and pretty sure Quintens could be mounted the same. One question though, is the square rubber block mount designed to take the weight on a angle? As I know a lot of rubber bobbins are not load bearing, they are meant to be mounted flat with the weight just pushing down on them. Quote
TAFKARM Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 Here's some pics... Looks like fun if it needs to come off Quote
Kingster Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 Looks like fun if it needs to come off TBH it's a 2min job. Just undo the nut on the bottom of the bobbin! Quote

No idea TBH - but it doesn't weigh much This is the factory supplied item - and I couldn't see any other way to make it fit - so assume it is OK. Quote
Quinten Posted March 30, 2015 Author Posted March 30, 2015 I was pointed towards http://forum.wscc.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic/101816-exhaust-mounting-bracket/ and have now seen kingster's bracket as well and that's the missing link in the puzzle. My bracket is angled 90 degrees, with the bobbin on top. With a different bracket that points towards the cars bodywork it is quite clear that the exhaust is pulled closer as well. Must admit that I too have my doubts on the bobbin fitted that way (this comes from the fact that my upright bobbin sheared even when in the upright position causing this exhaust problem in the first place!), but it seems to work for everyone... The car is going in tomorrow, so I'll have another chat with the guy doing the work, but I think I will have to 'make do' with what I have. Quote
