Geoffrey Carter (Buttercup)
Afternoon All. I have had a few cars with diesel engines and they have been what I would describe as "brisk" with good fuel economy. Why do people not put diesel engines in a Westfield? Please don't jump down my throat saying its sacrilege but generally wondered why not.
SootySport
It's been done with a Ford Focus unit. They called them Weasels

Boombang
I saw a VX diesel engined Westfield at the Nurburgring a number of years ago. Trouble with diesel engines is they don't rev, and their 'power' delivery doesn't suit a sports car in the slightest.
M444TTB
It's been done with a Ford Focus unit. They called them Weasels It wasn't even that good. I believe it was a Sierra engine. I'll grab the book later on the check. It was a one-off factory supported car though.

ALLADDIN
I drive a derv, have done for years - can't imagine anything worse in a wf. Defeats the whole point of having one for what I need from it, Bit like buying a motorbike and fitting a Briggs and stratton mixer motor . Mark (smokey mow)
IIRC there was one done a couple of years ago with a VW TDI engine
Lyonspride
I have vague memories of the first (apparently) Diesel Westfield, going back to probably about 1996. IIRC It was a 1.8 Diesel unit from a MK4 Escort.
Mark (smokey mow)
I've dug out my copy of the Robinshaw & Bouckley book The Weasel dates from around 1992 and was a one off built by Richard Wilsher. It ran a modified 1800cc sierra turbo diesel mated to a P100 pickup gearbox all in a SEight chassis. Performance was quite good 120bhp @ 4500rpm 60-65mpg 0-60 in 6.6 seconds

Mark (smokey mow)
with a Performance spec. like that it should have been called the Wheezle...... Nem............ Bare in mind this was 1992 when most cars of that era were being fitted with X-Flows, Pinto's and CVH's. 120bhp back then was considered to be quite respectable. Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman
A few Wiesel copies were built in the following years. Then Practical Performance Car ran a competition to win a Westfield kit; the winner to be selected based on submitting an interesting project brief to the mag. The winner built a car based round the VAG diesel. It was an interesting build story, that featured in the mag. Eventually sold on, the completed car is now down in Australia - the current owner posted on here a few times. I've had a few modern diesels now, and they've made some cracking cars. They've all had one thing in common though, huge torque, from low down, though most have had narrow rev ranges, they haven't all. But they have all been heavy, complicated lumps. Mark (smokey mow)
I knew I'd seen the build thread for the VAG engined one somewhere http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=247471
