Paul Gibney - Lancashire AO
I know it depends on what plod u bump into.... But what does the actual law state about displaying A tax disc , as when car is on a sorn u can't apply for disc until 2 days before new month starts . So if doing on line won't receive disc till 3 or 4th of month. The old line of tax in the post never used to wash but as with new laws from Nov on tax discs surely not a problem as they can check on PNC. None of the above will stop me from driving on 1st of month.... Just wondered!
Mark (smokey mow)
I believe for failure to display a tax disc the current penalty if caught is a non-endorsable fixed penalty notice and a £100 fine. Can you not get to a post office to tax it with form V10 ?
Paul Gibney - Lancashire AO
Post office days before end of month queuing behind all those people with the wrong documents ...... Not my idea of fun...
Mark (smokey mow)
The chance of a £100 fine isn't my idea of fun either and whist I'd accept the chance of being stopped is small now everything is being checked with ANPR it seems an avoidable risk for the sake of 10minutes queueing at the local post office
pickmaster Andy Lowe
Living in rural Wales we don't have local post offices any more that sell car tax or even open most days The helicopter the police fly around in probable can't see the tax disc from up on high and all the arrive alive camera vans don't pull you over any more I did see a bus once last year !!!!!!! Paul Gibney - Lancashire AO
The law of sod says u will get caught . I know what u are saying mark but surely if you have paid for your car tax but not received yet as car was on a sorn and not able to apply until 2 days before (daft rule) surely there must be some leeway on producing a disc..... Robin Parker (Red Spider) - Yorkshire AO
I may be wrong, but I think once you apply on line your covered. As with MOT and insurance, tax is on allsorts of databases so police can check up all about you. I'm in the same boat as you are as I'm going to tax from the 1st of March and was wondering about it aswell.
Mark (smokey mow)
I may be wrong, but I think once you apply on line your covered.there is a separate offence for non-display of a tax disc, which is different to that of not having purchased a tax disc Section 33 of the Vehicle Excise and Registrations act 1994 refers http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1994/22/section/
dombanks
I'm with red spider I think there is some sort of 7 day leeway if you buy online to allow for postage

You are indeed taxed - but I think the problem here is that is a separate issue of the tax disc not being in the window - in other words the offence of 'failure to display'... I would like to think that common sense would be used - but it is the £100 gamble you are taking...!
dombanks
From dvla site I have not received the tax disc. Can I use the vehicle without the tax disc displayed? When you apply for a tax disc online or by using DVLA's phone service you are able to legally continue to drive your vehicle for up to 14 days after the tax disc has expired while you wait for the new tax disc to arrive. This will only apply when you have applied for a new tax disc before the current one expires. You should continue to display the expired disc on your vehicle, until the new one arrives. Lawrie
Yes, the old 14 days grace came back with online applications. The paper disc means nothing now and goes later this year. The hole holding your tax disc holder will have to be filled. They don't look at tax discs anymore and catch offenders with cameras (static and mobile) with number plate recognition and a link to the who's paid database. So if its on SORN, don't think you can give it a quick test up the bypass. And the Police are going to get upset about none standard or non vertical number plates as the cameras can't read them There are many new laws in the pipeline, thanks to our friends in Brussels that it all take some following
