Stuart Posted October 22, 2013 Posted October 22, 2013 Frank Pickles have decent gap insurance prices Quote
Deanspoors Posted October 23, 2013 Author Posted October 23, 2013 Hi guys, thanks for all your opinions. My main gripe about buying a second hand car is the higher interest rate for finance. Comparing a new c63 to a 12 month old one although the car was 15k cheaper on paper because the new one had almost 8k dealer contribution and a much lower interest rate it only £2 a month less. With a final payment of £3000 less. I like the jags, but I think I'd only go for the new F Type and that's a 70k car :-/ I totally agree with the paint plan and the salesman was really trying to push the Mercedes gap insurance. Quote
Hammy Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 Personal opinion but.... Sit back a minute, and work out the numbers - what's the total cost over the finance plan and what will it be worth at the end of this period?. I expect this plus the running cost will be bigger than an enormous thing ! (esp given the perception of increasing fuel costs, and spares/servicing may make a car like that worthless in 3yrs - look at the rate of fall of prices). We all love our cars, but......... Drop the finance and start saving instead - don't then need gap insurance and it will be a lot cheaper. ( I expect the dealer only makes his money for the sale on the gap insurance) I'll go back in my shell now. Quote
Norman Verona Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 It matters not what it's worth in 3 years time as the car can be handed back. However you need to calculate the cost of ownership over the 3 years and then factor in the loss of the residual. Use the final payment as the residual. It now looks expensive. Quote
Hammy Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 Sorry didn't pick up on the lease bit - must read harder Still looks expensive. Quote
Norman Verona Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 Just a minor point. When APR was first introduced it was illegal not to quote the APR. Not sure if this has changed. Quote
jeff oakley Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 You have to badly want and be able to look at blowing £950 per month on any car. I would always look at second hand as the hit that car will take will be insane as soon as it is driven away. The other thing to consider is at the end. Merc are very picky from what I have read, on their interprutation of fair ware and tear, and I have read abou several thousand punds being requested to put the car back as they want it in motre than one case. If you take the final ballon payment option that matters less. It is an awesome car but god you will pay for the pleasure Quote
Deanspoors Posted October 23, 2013 Author Posted October 23, 2013 Thanks for the replies, I guess it just comes down to wanting to spend £950 a month on a car. I wouldn't say I badly want it, but I can afford it quite easily without having to make any sacrifices at the moment. Quote
Cleggy the Spyder Man Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 as David says - my first thoughts are going to be on depreciation on something like this with a stonking great engine and then there's the MPG very nice though I must admit I spotted this the other day in my local garage - ok not the right colour (for me anyway) but I thought for the money that's a cracking car http://www.junction17cars.co.uk/used-cars/mercedes-benz-c-class-c63-4dr-auto-yaxley-201310019052489 Quote
Cleggy the Spyder Man Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 I read this the other day - I couldnt quite believe the specs (worth checking that c02 figure) http://www.pistonheads.com/news/default.asp?storyId=28632 that's where my money would go amazing Quote
Deanspoors Posted October 23, 2013 Author Posted October 23, 2013 Looking at the second hand market, I think it's probably going to be best to just compromise and buy a 2010/2011 Low mileage saloon (less than 20k), which are available from £30k and buy outright over 4 years. Quote
ACW Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 If you can afford it and want it -do it. My rs6 did 3.5 years from new 75k miles and still had a residual of > 50%. In % terms it's the best car I've ever had for residuals mostly due to keen initial cost and the right desirable extras. However of course in running and absolute terms it was also the worst. Damn quick, and ironically the only car ive not been nicked in. 17 mpg at best. 63amg will be similar, but not 4wd. Quote
Norman Verona Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 My lad had an A8, ex demo, cost £80,000 new. 2 years later he struggled to sell it and ended up with £17,000. Quote
JeffC Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 My pal has had 2 C63 Amgs,he bought the second one new and the deal made a used one seem pointless, the second one had some performance pack fitted . he changed the exhaust and headers got it remapped that made it even quicker, was bl**dy loud though! he replaced the C63 with a BMW X6 3.0D twin turbo and he reckons the C63 was very similar on MPG with 24 being achievable steady away , I wasnt a fan of the Merc and that was down to build quality, the plastic on the dash and steering wheels is like something you would expect to find in an Astra, he now has one of the new Datsun GTR s and that is epic in terems of speed and handling (not build quality) , only car I have ever got out of and said that it was too fast If going used is an option I would also consider the Later M5"s they are cracking value for money and really nicely built. oh and as above if you can afford it do it, we are a here just a short time and a good time.
