I don't know what to do now - advise please!

Bit disillusioned and p******** off at the moment!

 

As some of you may know I had a track day (March 10th was the fateful day!) cut very short when my gearbox died....

After a lot of help from the forum (Chris!) I've managed to gain access to the top of the box through the top cover to find the roll pin has sheared, which I have removed. BGH have kindly sent me a replacement rollpin FOC. 

 

Bear in mind in March it was cold and miserable. 

 

I got distracted, did some tidying up of the wiring loom and scuttle, ordered a carbon dash ready to go in, swapped my interior side panels for carbon ones, learnt how to do a gel coat repair.....none of this is actually addressing the elephant in the room though. 

 

Im back from 3 weeks in Australia and now I have to get it sorted. 

 

Trouble is, I havent got a clue what Im doing with it. Im quite demoralised by it, gutted that I missed stoneleigh and gutted Im not out enjoying the sun! I havent got the first clue where to start with aligning everything to get the roll pin back in. 

 

I'm very reluctant to send the g/box off, mainly because dropping an engine and box out isn't something ive done before and seems very daunting. (mind you, so did the loom until i got stuck in!)

 

The way i see it I have a few options:

 

1) Do some more research and fix it through the top cover myself. Not sure this is viable as I've already done as much research as I can find, its going to take time and I don't want to miss the summer!

 

2) Find a friendly local gearbox specialist, low load it over to them and get them to fix it from the top cover. 

 

3) Take the engine and gearbox out, take gearbox to specialist, get them to fix, put engine and box back in. (Typing it like that makes it sound so easy!)

 

4) Send it to NMS, get them to sort it. Last resort really due to Australian holiday enforced financial contraints. 

 

What would you do? I'm at the end of my tether.....

 

BTW Australia is amazing, you should all go if you get the chance.

Organise a BBQ at your house.  Invite some the local members over and in exchange for a few burgers and (soft) drinks I'm sure many hands will soon be able to assist in getting you back and on the road again. :)

Admittedly I have an eleven rather than a seven, but I've found removing/replacing the engine to be much easier than you might think. I've done it 3 times now, and the last time it took about 30 minutes to take out and about 45 to reinstall - I did have  the correct tools (and a hoist) to hand. As for whether it's the best route to take, I don't know, but should think it would be much easier to work onthe box if it's out of the car.

 

It could of course, be entirely different for sevens...

Exactly this; here in Cheshire we have three or four members living really, really close to each other. When the gearbox of the least mechanically minded of them packed up, all the others were round pulling engines and swapping the box out.

 

It's what makes the club the club that it is. :yes:

Hey Russ. It might be worth giving Road and Race Transmissions in Kent a ring. They came recommended to me on here when I had my diff rebuilt an Phil the owner has/ has had caterhams so should know if you can work on it whilst in the car. If you want their number just let me know and I can find it later.

I think you can get to the roll pin on the selector without removing the box.

 

Russ, if you email me I'll send you back the manual for the gearbox.

 

Apart from spanners I thing the only other tool you need is a pair of long nose pliers.

Try and get along to the Herts Beds and Bucks local meet this Thursday. There are a few people there that know their gearboxes very well and I am sure would be happy to offer advice.

Hi Russ

I'm no gearbox expert but deal with all things mechanical so sure I could figure it out, I might be able to pop round tomorrow evening, if not defo over the weekend some time to suit?

I would do the BBQ first and invite Marto along and all the Beds, Herts and Bucks crowd :-) and if that dont work dump it at Troy's for a day or so.... :-)

Even at the worst case, it's a couple of leisurely hours to remove the engine, get a replacement box (dirt cheap) and a couple of hours to refit.

Unfortunately we had to do twice (due to an unforeseen problem) but the second time took us 4 hours from start to test drive. Hopefully there'll be people down that way that can offer to help.
