PC or Mac ?

well said smeg, The arguments of pc's and macs will go on forever whilst the companies exist. I'm a pc man 'cos I like to be in control and know what I'm doing. Macs do offer the "least resistance route" but are very expensive for what they are. (Ipads esp. - how much? I could buy a real computer for that :d )

Interesting discussion though.

Very well put. Could not have summed it up better myself.

And also I agree that people are comparing things like Macbook Pros and Macbook Airs with standard PCs/Laptops which is a mistake. The formers cost circa £1000 + . A similar priced laptop would buy you a very top end sleek and powerful bit of kit, same with a desktop. Buy a £299 PC from PC world or similar and you'll get a POS celeron (that means slower than treacle) full of bloatware and general rubbish. You'll only have a frustrating time.

PCs do get viruses and malware way more than Macs. Incomparable really. The Mac lockdown sees to that. But I can tell you as an IT professional, that you can surf virus free for ever if you a) don't surf porn b) read before you click things.

With a little research you can spec/build a lightening fast PC with SSD storage (that's the real performance deal breaker right now) for under £600 and have a totally clean win7/8 install, good AV (AVG free and superantispyware) and have a trouble free experience with boot times that are a few seconds from cold, or as I do, wake form sleep in around 2 seconds (SSD). Mine boots from cold so fast that the Win 7 "flag logo" doesn't get a change to complete it's animation before I'm at the fully loaded desktop. I spent under £560 - and that's with a top end GPU.

Saying that, most people do not want to do the research or it's just no their thing. They are not interested in that kind of thing. They just want to go to forums, send emails, and edit videos in iMovie (great but very limited). For that luxury, you pay the Apple price. That's fine. Really. But you can't be a non techie Apple user and then try and tell techie PC users (who have generally been using computers way before Mac users) that they don't know what they are missing. We do :-)

I have an iPad, and when my parents and older relatives ask what to buy - I tell them to get a MAC. I never have to give them tech support then, as the Mac walled garden system stops people getting into much too trouble. That's where the value in the high prices is for me. (Tablets with Android are changing all that though....)

Well said Dodgey, I found the latest Microsoft surface very interesting, esp the pro, me thinks M$ are looking very hard at attacking the ipad market! and before people take the p, remember everyone laughed when M$ decided to release the xbox saying they would no way beat nintendo and sony.

Now good old Bill Gates has left the scene there have been some interesting developments from M$ (windows 7 was the first which BG wasn't involved and it was cracking, windows 8 is also good - once you get used to it)

I bought a kindle fire for my wife for christmas. I was very impressed with the little thing, she can play simple games, surf the web and read books at night without disturbing me. Not bad for £130 either.

Interesting times

Thanks for your input guys, I made a decision and this is my first post from my new MacBook Pro. For me as an iPhone user and with Apple products working so easily together my choice in the end was between an iPad or a MacBook and I just wasn't sure the iPad would do everything I wanted.

Anyway a couple of hours in and so far I'm well impressed, all my photos and docs transferred from the old laptop, email accounts up and running in an instant and i'm even getting to grips with this trackpad, however even Apple can't improve my smelling spelling :d

Apple TV's very good if you pay £4.99 a month for Netflix. Over one million films and TV series. For example, top gear series on through to year before last with every episode/special. Countless films and kids program's, but there's other features and if you have iPad/iPhone you can use it as a remote (free app required) and if linked to iPhone/iPad you get iPlayer, 4OD and all the other things like that.

There's full iTunes... So films on there to hire/buy and tons of it all is in HD and some in 3D (including Netflix and iPlayer)

When link pc's, Macs, iPhone, iPad etc (apple products work better) you can duplicate screen on TV... good for DVD's, photo shows, video on phone, and everything else.

All for £100, no subscription.

Loads more too
