Insurance companies for Westfields...

I spoke to A Plan today regarding getting my car insured. For; 2,000miles PA, 26YO, Garaged overnight, New build Megabusa was £305 Fully Comp, which I found quite attractive, but I would still like to phone around elsewhere to see what the competition is like, so what companies are everyone else with? Thought this would probably be useful for other Newbies too.

Seem to be the main ones

They are all brokers. I was insured with LV this year via A Plan and last year via Frank Pickles (who no longer use LV for some reason).

Adrian Flux was best for me other than A Plan which I didnt know about at the time! But from seeing everyone else's previous posts, A Plan seems the best for WSCC!

When I was first looking I found a couple more

REIS

0115 985 0165 - sports car dept

From memory they would not cover you unless you had experience of driving high performance rear wheel drive cars if the engine was over 1.8

Competition Car Ins.

0844 892 1966

They covered you for Track days also (up to 5 organised by ATDO inc 2 European on FIA approved Track)

I've recommended MSM before. Dave and his team are very helpful and go all the way to sort problems. I was with them for a few years after Adrian Flux really pee'd me off. When my car reached it's 15th birthday the recovery service included in the policy ran out. They searched round and found an RAC policy that was the same cover for not much more. They took out a policy for me and I sent them the cheque.

I broke down with broken clutch plates in the middle of France. I rang the RAC and they said there was no policy in existence in my name. I rang MSM who said they'd ring me back. They rang back every half hour with updates. They kept on it until it was established the policy had been processed by a rep who still had the paperwork on him. As soon as the RAC realised it was their mistake they rang me and apologised and the breakdown lorry turned up 15 minutes later.

It's not just the price that matters, it's the service as well.

They went further than that.  You had to have owned the cars in question.  Semantics perhaps, but important if you're looking at buying a Westie after a period of hiring / sharing a car in some way.

Frank Pickles also wanted similar.

It's worth noting that bike-engined cars are usually significantly more expensive to insure than car engined variants, irrespective of relative power.

Yes, most insurance companies that handle kits now know exactly what you mean when you say "it's only a one litre/1100/1300" etc

Posted

Now I've insured my Westfield twice the message seems consistent: They don't really care what's on the car unless there is forced induction and/or a bike engine. A roll cage too perhaps. Otherwise it's all about the value. BECs do seem to be more expensive than their (admittedly strong) performance warrants though.

Looked at the market including 2gether and TRYoungs but stayed with A-Plan. £158.86 including full UK breakdown cover. TRYoungs were next closest. HTH Martyn

So, renewal from 2gether; £220.19 insurance £47.50 breakdown. £267.69 total.

 - Ring them, make a few minor changes, nothing at all changes but don't renew and say I will check elsewhere first.

New quote from A-plan; £150.07 for the insurance and £39.95 for the breakdown. £190.05 total.

 - Same cover/details given above.

Ring back 2gether to challenge it, put on hold... They cant reduce the breakdown but miraculously the insurance drops by £83 bring the new total to £`84.50 and hence £5 less than A-plan.

That for a 1900cvh engined narrowbody, 3k miles, £6k value, social&commuting, £100 excess, 'kept on drive' aged 27 three points remaining within the last 5 years.

Worked, as I stopped with 2gether, but why the hell do they play these games.

Only company I know of who doesn't is Chaucer Direct who I have used for the tintop many times.

Similar but less extreme example, A-Plan renewal £220. Adrian Flux offered £170 with everything all in (legals etc) A-Plan then offered £175 but was too late, if it was £175 in the first place I would have auto-renewed.

28, garaged, with some 'bad things' on the licence.
